System's Back Home!
Posted by ZAk on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 10:58 PM

23 gig in over 18 different city covered almost most of Europe in 30 days, System of a Down finished their newest big European tour since 2002, and the first one right after "Mezmerize" release in May.17.

The band are coming Home again for a break before releasing their next single from "Mezmerize" (Which will be 'Question!') and getting ready for big North America tour starts at Aug.04 kickoff at Long beach and endup in Toronto at Sep.01, 2005.

The European tour started right at Lisbon city in Portugal, the Portuguese fans were lucky as it was the first concert after releasing "Mezmerize" so, they were proudly the first fans who listen to the new album songs live!

At this concert, System of a Down started differently and changed their usual setlist they used to play in previous concerts (before releasing Mezmerize).

The new setlist starts with "Soldier Side" by Daron alone on the stage and the big sign of Mezmerize cover art, then right after the band hit the stage with "BYOB" followed by "Revenga" in the same order as the 3 songs listed in "Mezmerize".

Another remarkable change in the setlist was the new modifications on the old songs, such as 'Science' When Serj add more piano effects and sing a short armenian interlude (an armenian poem).

Also, they kept playing George Michael's cover song 'somebody Tell me' right before Sugar along with some robot voice effect, which was also used as an interlude in the middle of 'War?' song with different lyrics.

 John at Zero!

'Mr. Jack' also had some change, with more "very melodic" solo guitar playing (as intro) and an even more melodic interlude in the middle of the song (using both guitar and keyboard) which extended the length of the song from 4:15 minutes to almost 7 minutes.

Finally, Daron used to play Neill Young's cover song 'My, My, Hey, Hey' right before playing 'Kill Rock 'n' Roll'.

Also, it was the first time, 'Revenga', 'Lost in Hollywood' 'Sad Statue' and 'Question!' been played live on stage.

So, beside the usual setlist, the European fans had 11 new songs (7 never played before) to hear live which were:
Soldier Side, B.Y.O.B, Revenga, Kill Rock 'n' Roll, Cigaro, Holy Mountain, Lost in Hollywood, Sad Statue, Delphine, 'My My Hey Hey' and Question!

Best Concert been played in 10 years!

Right after Portugal, the band had a gig in Madrid, Spain, according to the band in one of the interviews, they said "it was one of the best concert we ever played from 10 years!"

in that concert system played the new setlist (same as Lisbon one), a friend of Daron played guitar along with him in the song 'Aerials'

John on ZERO!

Italian fans were on date with System at Milan on May.31, John surprised the fans by his zero bald head after a while of getting long hair, many fans noticed the band looked kinda "calmed" as they weren't active as usual except Shavo who were the most active one moving around on the stage and so on.

Shavo was the most active one

System in France (stage broke down, fan died and new interlude!)

French fans were lucky to get 2 gigs in 2 different cites, the first was in Lyon followed by another concert in Paris.

At Lyon concert, the barriers protecting the stage broke down under the people’s pressure after like 2 minutes of playing 'BYOB' which forced the band to stop playing, then Serj asked everyone to step back, and Daron tried to calm down the audience with a an easy song, a Led Zeppelin cover song but he replaced the words «I will always be loving you » by « I will always be fucking you ».- the usual Daron!

At the same concert, a 22 years old fan died due this incident which was a sad thing.

In Paris concert (the next day), System made great show as well, and Daron played a new interlude confused people if its a cover for unknown song or its a new song the song called "Delphine", it was never played again though.

System in the UK!

Brixton Academy had 3 gigs in 3 days in a row (June 3,4 and 5), they played the same setlist (with almost the same order and everything) in the 2nd concert, they played (for the first time) 'Sad Statue'.

At June.12, System got back again to the UK to play another 2 gigs, Download Festival and Men Arena in Manchester.
Both were great though in UK concerts in general the fans were complaining from the very overpriced merchandise sold in the concerts.

Scandinavian tour!

in North of Europe, System played 3 concerts there (maybe for the first time from over 3 years) starting from Norway then Sweden and finally Denmark.

Keyboard been used a lot

In general the concerts were great, yet the fans were kinda annoyed because There was almost no communication with the audience, made some fans comments "it was like watching a DVD!"

Finally System's last stop was in Switzerland after playing in Greenfield Festival at Jun.26, and it was the end of one of the most successful European tours ever.

I was at the concert in Denmark, and it was NOT like watching a DVD! It was Systems first time in Denmark ever, so some of the fans had been waiting for years to see them live. I think it was a kick ass concert, and I havent seen any fans who says otherwise. :-)

Anyone have an mp3 of Daron's Neil Young cover? Although I generally look down upon those who cover the Master, I think he coul pull it off (which, if nothing else, shows my respect for him). So, anyone? Bueller?

PS: Good article, Zak!

I am going to assume that either zak's first language is not english or that he just has very bad grammar. This article was cool but very hard to understand. I can't believe that System is not coming to Las Vegas. Oh well I get to see them in TX.
