Recorded in Los Angeles with producer Rick Rubin, the first album, 'Mesmerize', is scheduled to be released in April, via Rubin's American Recordings, with 'Hypnotize' expected to follow in October.
Final track-listings detailing which songs will appear on which album, have yet to be confirmed, but here's the low-down on the phenomenal six tracks that K! was played ...
BYOB (Bring Your Own Bombs) From a raw, punk-ish intro, 'BYOB' thunders into a huge, syncopated riff before lurching into one of SOAD's most memorable choruses yet. Lyrics such as 'Blast off! It's party time! And we all live in a fascist nation!' suggest the band's social conscience its still intact. Kill Rock 'N' Roll 'So I felt like the biggest asshole/When I killed your rock 'n' roll' sings Daron Malakian in this mid-paced, melodic number. As previously reported in K!, Malakian is singing a lot more than he has in the past and here he harmonises with Serj Tankian beautifully. 'Question' Akin in intent to 'Aerials', haunting acoustic verses lay the base for some beautiful vocal harmonies - after, that is, a stomping riff has removed your face. Takes off halfway through into some speedy, syncopated riffing that will set pits alight around the world. Vicinity Proof that they haven't lost their love of the quirky, here SOAD sing about'terracotta pie' amid other, nonsensical lyrics. Throwing their complete bag of tricks into one song, 'Vicinity' is the band's very own bad acid trip put to music. Attack Starts with a thrash riff and explodes into yet another hugely melodic verse. 'We attack, attack, attack!' screams Serj Tankian. 'Attack all the homes and villages/Attack all the schools and hospitals.' That'll be America's foriegn policy covered then. Hypnotize Malakian and Tankian trade vocal lines over an Indian-tinged riff, followed by a head nodding groove over which the guitarist reveals he's 'just sitting in my car and waiting for my girl'. Another indication that these albums may be SOAD's best yet."
System Of A Down recently completed a headlining stint on Australia and New Zealand's Big Day Out festival, where guitarist Daron Malakian was not only surprised with the diversity of the bill, but also said that he was impressed with the wide musical tastes of the fans themselves. "I think this new generation is a lot more diverse, man. I was talking to some kids last night in the hallway at the hotel and they were wearing, like, a Pantera T-shirt and stuff, but they weren't just talking about heavy metal. They were talking about all kinds of different music. And that's nice, man, that's refreshing to see."
