With System of a Down on hiatus, guitarist Daron Malakian took the opportunity to explore more song-based work, writing most of the album on keyboard. That said, several tracks have an intense metal-prog feel, which SOAD fans will find familiar.

"I wouldn't say it's where we left off with System," Malakian says of the Scars project, which he produced himself (with early input from Rick Rubin) — and also includes SOAD drummer John Dolmayan. "I have been trying to go to another place with it — without completely losing who I am."

I think you'll find most artist write songs using a keyboard/piano, it doesnt mean the album is going to feature any keyboard at all... although theres nothing wrong with that ;)

If you listen to the background of "They Say", there is definitely key board. It is better to hear it if you listen to the track on headphones. The keyboard in the background of the song has somewhat of a "Old School Hollywood" feel. Just listen closely and you will be able to hear. Maybe it is a sign that the album may be keyboard based in the background.
