SOADFans: AUDIOSLAVE'S MORELLO SEES SYSTEM CARRYING RAGE TORCH
General Band News

With System Of A Down making a huge statement with their first single off of their latest album Mesmerize, the band took on the politically charged subject of war. The band is not afraid to show their political side, and that's what Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello appreciates.

Morello was previously the guitarist for the seminal band Rage Against The Machine and he was asked if System is picking up the political torch that was left when his old band broke up.

"Yeah, I definitely agree that System Of A Down is carrying the banner of the overtly political rock, but it's not just that they're a political rock band. There are many political rock bands. They're a great band that has politics in it, and that's an important difference. Because the reason why bands, whether it's Rage [Against The Machine] or System, or the Clash or Public Enemy, why those bands get over, it's not because of the message exclusively, it's because message has such a powerful musical engine that it rides on. And that's when you really connect is the combination of culture and politics."

Audioslave is not a political band, but Morello is still very much a musical force politically. He does acoustic shows with under the moniker The Nightwatchman and he also has teamed with System Of A Down vocalist Serj Tankian for Axis Of Justice, an organization that helps youngsters find out more and get involved with various social and political organizations

System of a Down's Shavo Odadjian also had a nickname for his first car, a beat-up silver 1983 Ford Thunderbird. "It was called the 'Mean T-Bird' in high school because I had this, like, stereo system in there that would play metal the whole time, but it was just a broken down, beaten down car," said the bassist. "I bought it for $300. I had to retire it and I gave it to the Salvation Army. I took out the speakers and kept the big amplifier. That's what happened to the 'Mean T-Bird.' It was really tacky. We all had beaters."

System guitarist Daron Malakian's was "a white four-door 1987 Honda Accord that I took to the cemetery and crashed while — this sounds like a cheesy heavy metal story, but I crashed it listening to the song 'Black Sabbath' at the cemetery, because it was like a 15 mile-an-hour zone," he said. "I was doing like 65. I actually, maybe a couple of weeks ago, told my parents how that car got wrecked for the first time."

Malakian replaced the wrecked Accord with another Accord — which he drove equally as recklessly and also destroyed in a near-fatal wreck. "After I crashed all the Accords, I had to drive my mom's Buick Regal," he lamented. "It had a bad radiator, and every time we drove it, it made this dinging noise. So you would have to drive, like the whole time, with this noise going."

SOADFans: System of a Down rocker pounds out attack
General Band News

Hollywood was no fantasy for Daron Malakian. Forget about celluloid heroes or silver-spoon coddling in mansions. Such dreams were not part of his childhood.
"I grew up across from a motel where a lot of prostitutes hung around. And there were a lot of gangs," he says. "When I think of Hollywood, I don't think of the movies."

Malakian is now a co-songwriter/co-conspirator with System of a Down, a hugely successful group of rock provocateurs that attacks greed, hypocrisy, and self-righteous superiority wherever it sees it.

On the new album Mezmerize, Malakian takes some head-on shots at his hometown.

Hit Parader : Sept 2005

Here we are in yet another facelss recording stuido located deep in the heart of the San Fernando Valley.? We were patiently waiting for System Of A Down, and contemplating the photos adorning the walls of various rock gods from years gone by who have presumably recorded in these very chambers.? Faith No More and Alice Cooper...is that Trent Reznor from NIN or Aerosmith's Joe Perry?
