System of a Down POLITI-METAL MASTERS!

Here’s a notion that everyone interested in heavy music should consider:
System of a Down are one of the very few hard rock bands that have never known
failure. During their decade-long career they may have experienced the rare
setback and encountered the occasional nay-sayer, but for the most part it’s
been an amazingly smooth and successful run to the top of the rock pile for this
Armenian/American quartet. Ever since their self-titled debut disc emerged back in 1996, this Los Angeles-based experi-metal unit has scored hit after hit,
selling more than 12 million albums in the process. With the overwhelming
success of their latest album pairing, Mezmerize and Hypnotize, Serj Tankian
(vocals), Daron Malakian (guitar), Shavo Odadjian (bass), and John Dolmayan
(drums) have once again proven that they stand head-and-shoulders above all who
may lay claim to their title as the most eclectic, esoteric hard band in the
world. But for a unit that apparently holds all the “answers”, System is a group
still surrounded by “questions”. Are they sometimes too smart for their own
good? Has success dulled this band’s razor-sharp political edge? Has their music
found new creative pastures as System has continued to grow? We found the
answers to all these questions, and more, during our recent conversation with
Malakian. |

Lies, Torture and Murder Exposed!

IN
THE second decade of the twentieth century in the Turkish village of Efkere, a
six year old Armenian boy called Stepan Haytayan watched as his father was
wrestled away from him and tied with rope to a line of fellow men – everyday,
working, well-meaning men – by Turkish soldiers of the Ottoman Empire. The young
boy tried to kiss his father, but was pushed aside in the dirt by gun-toting
soldiers. He never saw his father again. Soon afterwards he discovered the body
of his grandmother amongst many corpses of friends, relatives and neighbours.
Soldiers had callously tried to throw her body into water to dispense of any
evidence, but her hair became entangled in thorns and lay there in the sun
overnight.
The young boy and his brother tried to untangle their grandmother, but her head
became separated from her body. Eventually they freed it and threw the head into
the water, before they were rounded up, separated and put into orphanages. Soon
afterwards the boy discovered the grave of his brother and tried to dig him up
with his bare hands, before soldiers again intervened: “Forget it, he’s dead.” |

Wizard get five questions (and answers) with John Dolmayan about comics,
movies and the launch of his new online comics site.
Rock and roll fans may recognize the name of this drummer from the
multi-platinum rock band System of a Down, but he’s also on his way to comic
superstardom. Later this year, the 34-year-old Dolmayan plans to launch
Torpedocomics.com , an ambitious online
comic book retail and community site. And he’ll also be hitting the road with
his comic book-inspired drum kit—adorned with art from the likes of Jim Lee,
Bernie Wrightson and Bill Sienkiewicz (as seen in
Wizard #181) to various conventions, including Wizard World Los Angeles on
March 16-18!
