John Dolmayan's custom drum kit

System of a Down are anything but your typical metal act. The SoCal-based
band has sold millions off the strength of their startlingly original, Middle
Eastern-tinged melodic rock music. SOAD’s last record(s), Mezmerize/Hypnotize,
debuted atop the Billboard charts when they were released last year. The
beloved, politically minded band, currently on hiatus, will likely be one of the
biggest bands on the planet when they reform sometime in 2007 or early 2008.
John Dolmayan (drummer for System of a Down) has been working with well known
comic artists on a custom drum kit recently. The comic book fan talked to Crave
shortly after coming home from System of a Down’s tour with OZZFEST this summer,
and right before running out of the house to buy a new suit for a wedding ... |

The Last Song and Dance

Running through the theatre lobby, the sound of a familiar voice made me look at
the clock. "7 pm? I missed 15 minutes?! What are they singing?” I said. The song
wasn't familiar and I couldn't make out the lyrics but I knew who was onstage.
Then I heard Serj say, "See you in a few."
A huge sign on the wall read, "Please Insert 50 Cents." Great. Now I have to put
two quarters into a slot to gain entry and the quarters kept falling into the
coin return. My friend was standing next to me, although I couldn't remember her
name and I didn't recognize her. "There's an easier way to do this," she said.
"Use the combination they gave you on your ticket." She demonstrated by putting
her hand on a black knob, turning it to numbers that were scattered this way and
that. The door slowly opens after a click and I hesitated to look around for
Tony.
I was expecting to see him somewhere in his wheelchair, but instead I found him
walking awkwardly, heading towards a drinking fountain. He was trying to
maintain his balance by throwing his legs out in front of him as he walked. He
can cover more ground that way and he can stay on his feet. I couldn't take my
eyes off him. His precision was hypnotizing. I began to zone out with a smile.

Ozzfest Montreal, Can August 02 2006 Review

We lived in a student residence with complete strangers, had 20 hours of bus
travels, slept 12 hours in the 4 days spent there and it was all out of our poor
teenage pockets. Best money ever spent.
I won't lie, when we arrived at Parc Jean Drapeau I was miserable. Rain was
pounding, we hadn't even had tickets yet and we had gone 30 consecutive hours
without sleep. Yet soon enough, tickets were purchased from the box office and
the sun was shining. After lining up for two hours and hearing a Bad Acid Trip
soundtest in the distance, people flocked into a park drenched by a previous
shower.
We camped out briefly on the hill at the back of the park to get an aerial view
of everything. The amount of people was unreal. Then as I was eating my hotdog
géant, it started pouring again. In mere minutes I was drenched and cold, I
could barely see the stage. So my friend and I trecked through the mud to the
outskirts of the pit where we thought it would be warmer and chances of survival
would be greater. We ended up spending the entire show at the railing left of
the sound/equipment area about 40 yards from the stage, it was a near perfect
view. |

Toronto, ON - July 25, 2006 Review

After
seeing the band three times, the first two with longer sets and one being 10
feet infront of Daron, despite it all, this was the greatest concert of them and
ultimately out of all time.
The day started off early, I figured I would need to make the best out of the 90
bucks of my ticket so me and 3 friends headed down to the Molson Amphitheatre
for the 3'o clock start time. After getting a picture taken to be put on the
future Scars on Broadway website, receiving stickers for them and getting raped
of my water bottles by security (but successfully sneaking in granola bars!) we
settled down to catch Norma Jean. They sucked. The next band was Bleeding
Through and they were respectable.
Unearth was on next, who I was disappointed
by when they were an opening band for Slipknot. However they made major gains
and were a great band, one of their guitarists is the most charismatic and
coolest guy to watch. He was posing for pictures by fans who illegally brought
in cameras, doing beer bongs, pushups and spitting his gum up in the air and
catching it. Unearth was very impressive. Atreyu followed and I had heard much
about them so I had high expectations.

Chicago, IL - July 16, 2006 Review

Question! What are the two things I believe every red-blooded American rock
fan should do? Answer: Visit the White House and go see Ozzfest. What is the
difference between these two? I’d go back to Ozzfest.
On second stage, as we were walking in we hear Ozzy. He sounds GREAT!!! His
voice, his words, both spoken and sung – crystal clear. I'll NEVER forget, after
he was done with his set, he says to the crowd, “One more song! One more song!”
and of course, they chant it back a few times, in unison: ONE MORE SONG! ONE
MORE SONG! ONE MORE SONG! ONE MORE SONG!... And, with a shrug in his voice, he
simply replies, “Okay,” like it was no big deal, but, he had to think about it.
Just as we enter, they do their final bows.
Before my review, the one most of you have dreaded, let me just say how pissed I
was that the 200-level seats WERE ALMOST COMPLETELY EMPTY!!! I’m not joking.
From what I saw, there was, 50 people filling them, maybe (but, I couldn’t see
all of them). I couldn’t believe it. This venue was FAR from being sold out.
Lawn wasn’t full, either. Lawn was spacious, but, not empty.
At some point, probably close to 2100, my cousin’s girlfriend is telling me
something, lights go down, audience goes “WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!”, I stop
paying attention to her abruptly. At this point I knew:
DARON! |
