System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan takes a break from Ozzfest to tell EW's Clark Collis about the comic-book illustrates who worked on his custom set

Guitars have long come in all shapes, sizes, and decorative designs. Drum kits? Not so much. But three years ago System of a Down skinsman and comic-book nut John Dolmayan decided to play Fairy Godmother to this Cinderella of rock instruments by getting some of his favorite artists to decorate his 10-piece kit.

EW talked to him about the project, the prog-metallers' current headlining stint at Ozzfest (dates through Aug. 13), and the future of the band.

System's got it down
Interviews

john08System of a Down is a band hasn't let success overshadow personal pursuits -- like poker and brokering an apology for a century-old wrong.
Photos rarely capture the true essence of a band, but this portrait of System of a Down comes close to representing the four faces of the Armenian-American metal acrobats.

There's vocalist Serj Tankian, the curly-haired Rasputin figure with a silly grin. His lyrics on System's last two albums, Mezmerize/Hypnotize, are just as loopy. Interspersed with biting condemnations of war, politics and Hollywood are unexpected bursts of nonsense: "Banana banana banana terra cotta!" he sings on Vicinity of Obscenity.

Then, there's guitarist Daron Malakian, the wide-eyed scamp who looks like he's trying to conjure up a halo over his head. His bratty vocals on Lost In Hollywood and B.Y.O.B. provide a counterpoint to Tankian's deeper, richer tones.

System of a Down fight the fight
Interviews

What you really need to know about System of a Down is that they're honestly the most important band on the third planet.
There may be better acts, but their elevated, chart-ravaging mix of powerful instrumentation, wicked social consciousness and inventive, multipart harmony has literally redefined what an American band can aspire to. Born in Armenia and created in Hollywood, of all places, no one this popular shows so much soul. The events of 9-11 and its resultant tsunami of counter-attacks on the Middle East being a mere blip in their eternal political advocacy against injustice - be it illegal war, torture, civilian casualty, corporate rollbacks amid record profits, violent pornography or even just simple Hollywood fakery.

No one else makes fighting back so much fun. We're lucky to have them back Sunday at the Oiler rink - Rexall Place - so soon after September's mind-blowing arena show.

daron ahoy 2005System Of A Down's post-Ozzfest life will include a new band for guitarist Daron Malakian. The artist is in the process of forming and writing songs for Scars On Broadway, which will start operating in earnest once Ozzfest wraps in mid-August. The band is shooting to have its debut album out in the summer of 2007.

"I'm still kind of getting the whole band together at this point," reports Malakian, "After I get back home from Ozzfest that's pretty much what I'll be focusing on.

"I think a System fan will be able to relate to the music, but there's a few different directions I want to take, whether it be a little bit more ethnic or sometimes electronic," he adds. "There's just a few artistic directions I want to take with Scars that I haven't taken with System yet."

Shavo's on the Screen soon with the Rza!
System of a Down Members' Side Projects
Posted by ZAk on Thursday, June 01, 2006 - 01:08 AM

System of a Down's bassist, Shavo Odadjian and The Rza from Wu-Tang are teaming up early June for writing/recording a new solo record but that's not it, There's also plans to release singles and tour.

It was reported before, earlier in last October, that there's 'talking' about a side project but without further details; Side project is 'not written in stone,' Shavo's talking in October 2005, 'but we're talking about it.'

Odadjian said he first befriended the Wu when the two groups teamed up with producer Rick Rubin for a new version of Wu's "Shame," which opens 2000's Loud Rocks hip-hop/rock summit LP. Odadjian has kept in touch with the RZA ever since, and they'd often talk about working together again on some future project.

They also participated in an April 24th rally outside the Turkish Embassy, the April 25th Capitol Hill screening of excerpts from Carla Garapedian's powerful new film "Screamers," and a series of Congressional meetings and media interviews.

In accepting the award on behalf of System of a Down, drummer John Dolmayan noted that, "This is a very personal cause for us. We are honored to be here to represent Armenians and also United States citizens. We consider ourselves very fortunate to bring this cause forward to people who may not necessarily have had a chance to understand or learn anything about the Armenian Genocide. We also feel it’s important to bring up issues that are taking place right now, such as the Darfur Genocide. As Armenians, I would like to challenge you to do what you can to help these poor people that are suffering the way we did almost a hundred years ago."
