FAIR TO MIDLAND To Release EP Through SYSTEM OF A DOWN Frontman's Label

Genre-bending Dallas progressive rock band FAIR TO MIDLAND will release its debut EP, "The Drawn and Quartered", on November 7 via SYSTEM OF A DOWN frontman Serj Tankian's label Serjical Strike.

The EP's studio tracks — "Orphan Anthem '86" and "Kyla Cries Cologne" — showcase FTM's flair for combining progged-out virtuosity with lead-heavy riffs, impassioned vocals, and dynamic tidal waves.

"It's not often that one comes across bands that are truly original, poetic, progressive, artsy and memorable, compounded by a killer live performance,” Tankian says. "FTM is such a band."

With mega-producer David Bottrill (TOOL, KING CRIMSON) behind the boards for their forthcoming Serjical Strike debut album, FAIR TO MIDLAND are "poised to turn rock music on its ear in 2007," according to a press release.

DEFTONES Drummer Talks About Collaboration With Serj
System of a Down Members' Side Projects
Posted by ZAk on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 11:45 AM

Sacramento rockers Deftones found their usual five-member troupe augmented for the recording of new album 'SaturdayNightWrist' thanks to the addition of two L.A.-dwelling singers -- System of a Down's Serj Tankian and Giant Drag's Annie Hardy.

Tankian, a longtime Deftones associate, appears on the track 'Mein,' which offers a different kind of vocal performance than fans are used to from the frontman.

"You can tell it's totally him, but it's not way up there, like operatic," Deftones sticksman Abe Cunningham tells AOL Music. "It's smooth. It happened to work out kind of cool. It wasn't a planned thing."

The Hardy collaboration wasn't planned either. As the three years it took to make 'SNW' were winding down, Deftones singer Chino Moreno bumped into the singer while he was in L.A. recording his final vocals.

"It was one of those chance things," Cunningham says. Moreno recruited Hardy to duet on the track 'Pink Cellphone.' "It's a little back-and-forth action between a guy and a girl, and it just adds a really nice change to the record," says the drummer. "I think she's reading out of this old self-help book. It just sounds very cool in contrast to everything else."

Serj talking about solo album
System of a Down Members' Side Projects
Posted by Mikke on Thursday, August 17, 2006 - 02:15 PM

System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian has revealed that he's in the throes of a solo album, which he hopes to release at some point in 2007. System Of A Down announced that the last time fans will see the band for a long while is on the 2006 Ozzfest tour, which closed this weekend.

Tankian said he's looking forward to his solo album, which he had been working on for a while.

"It's hard to really explain, but I've done a lot of songs. I have a lot of songs for it already, and I'm... It's going to be rock, mostly rock, and different -- different than System, but I think it will have a lot of the truth telling that System has, and potency that it has, represented in a different way. That's really all I can say."

Tankian added that the album will be very different than his experimental and improvisational Serart project.

"Serart was a collaboration that I did with Arto Tuncboyaciyan, and that was more of an improvisational record. We did the whole record in seven days, just walk in and do a whole record from scratch. And that was really fun. That would be more something to use for films or world music type of sphere. This would be more rock."

Tankian will also be busy supporting Bad Acid Trip, Slow Motion Reign, and his new signing Fair To Midland, which are all signed to his Serjical Strike label.

Serj to rock with Deftones on Octobor
System of a Down Members' Side Projects
Posted by ZAk on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 - 12:53 PM

Rock act the Deftones will break a three-year silence on Oct. 31 with fifth studio album, "Saturday Night Wrist." The 12-track set features a guest appearance from System Of A Down vocalist Serj Tankian on the song "Mein" and Giant Drag frontwoman Annie Hardy on the electronica-tinged "Pink Cellphone."

Deftones drummer Abe Cunningham told Billboard.com in February that the band nearly broke up while soldiering through "Saturday Night Wrist," which he describes as "a very complete record."

"If there was a VH1 'Behind the Music' special on us, it would be the perfect episode with divorces and all kinds of crap," he said. "It was just lack of communication. Thankfully, we've been reattaching our limbs."

The album kicks off with the detuned riff-fest "Hole in the Earth" and is further highlighted by heavy, melodic tracks such as "Cherry Waves," the punishing "Combat" and "Rats," which careens from screamed verses to a less in-your-face chorus. The set also features an instrumental, "Interlude."

The Deftones are in the midst of the Family Values tour with Korn, which next visits Denver tonight (Aug. 15).

Here is the track list for "Saturday Night Wrist":

"Hole in the Earth"
"FM"
"Beware"
"Cherry Waves"
"Mein" << Feat Serj Tankian
"Interlude"
"Tilde"
"Rats"
"Pink Cellphone"
"Combat"
"The Earth"
"Comanche"

The album should be out by Octobot 31, 2006
