Discussion with death-row inmate airing Friday
Tom Morello and Serj Tankian are best known for their rock and roll accomplishments, but their latest triumph is a journalistic one.
The co-founders of the Axis of Justice political organization recently scored a rare interview with Mumia
"[Mumia Abu-Jamal's] main efforts are about changing the outside world, not groveling to improve his own situation, although he is adamant about his innocence." — Tom Morello |

Shavo to guest on KCUF debut album
|
 |
| Posted by ZAk on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 11:28 PM |
KCUF, the new project featuring Crazy "White" Sean (ex-GWAR roadie) and former SNOT/AMEN/LO-PRO bassist John "Tumor" Fahnestock, will release their debut album on February 21 via 313 Recordings/Corporate Punishment Records. Entitled "Modern Primitive Punk", the CD includes guest appearances from Shavo Odajian (SYSTEM OF A DOWN), Sid "DJ Starscream" Wilson (SLIPKNOT) and James "Munky" Shaffer (KORN). Audio samples are available on the band's MySpace page at this location.
Commented Sean: "KCUF was just a project I had in my head for a long time, and I hooked up with Tumor and T-Shirt (a.k.a. Jeff Myers, also one a significant musical contributor to the record), and they helped bring it to life. . . From doing my Freakshow thing, I'd meet all the touring bands that come through Europe and a lot of them became friends, so I just asked them to be involved. A lot of people have called it a 'side-project,' or whatever, but it is what it is. It's just a record we made for fun, and asked some of our friends to come jam on."
According to Tumor, the KCUF project comes as a result of growing up with a musically mixed background. "I can speak for myself that I really am not trying to appeal to any one genre," he said. "I grew up, and it's safe to say the same for Sean, with both sides of the coin. I mean, one minute I was headbanging to JUDAS PRIEST and the next I was worshipping bands like D.R.I., S.O.D. or DEAD KENNEDYS." |

Axis of Justice Launches 2006 With Noam Chosmsky
|
 |
| Posted by whiskass on Saturday, January 07, 2006 - 06:33 PM |
"The Axis of Justice Radio Network", the monthly radio program hosted by Tom
Morello (AUDIOSLAVE) and Serj Tankian (SYSTEM OF A DOWN), will launch its 2006
season with a very special show set to air Friday, January 13. Morello and
Tankian will welcome Noam Chomsky, the famed scholar, political activist and
libertarian socialist. "The Axis of Justice Radio Network" can be heard on KPFK
in Los Angeles (90.7 FM) and in Santa Barbara (98.7 FM) at 7:00 p.m., online at
www.kpfk.org, and on XM Satellite Radio on XM channel 53.
The interview was conducted and taped in December and over the course of the
one-hour program, Chomsky discusses subjects such as Iraq, propaganda, American
activism, the international labor movement, and hope for the future. When
Chomsky was asked "What gives you hope for the future", he responded, "What
gives me hope is people like you, and your listeners. In fact, the general
population of the United States." He goes on to say how, despite right-wing
politicians and a massive campaign to shift American values to the right,
Americans maintain startlingly progressive, humane values.
Axis of Justice is a non-profit organization formed by Morello and Tankian. Its
purpose is to bring together musicians, fans of music, and grassroots political
organizations to fight for social justice together. Axis of Justice aims to
build a bridge between fans of music around the world and local political
organizations to effectively organize around issues of peace, human rights, and
economic justice.

Masters of Horror An interview with Buckethead and Serj Tankian
|
 |
| Posted by ZAk on Friday, November 18, 2005 - 05:23 AM |
This is not a CD review or a TV series review … or even a band endorsement.
This is not a plug for a video, though the setting for this interview was on the
set of the video shoot for the song “We Are One”, a song which features Serj
Tankian [System of a Down] on vocals and Buckethead on guitars. The song is from
Buckethead’s new release Buckethead & Friends [Serjical Strike Records] and was
selected for the soundtrack quite appropriately.
I was asked if I would like to come up to a cabin up in the San Bernardino
Mountains, about 3 hours outside Los Angeles, to meet Buckethead and Tankian,
get some photographs, and interview them. My answer to the friendly publicist
was: "Is a frog’s ass watertight?"
Now, how was I going to ask Buckethead questions? The guy doesn’t talk to the
media, directly anyway, but responds by using a puppet or writing his answers
down on paper. How do you approach an artist with those kinds of challenges? How
was I going to keep up with Serj if we got into a political discussion? I was
already told that he would not answer any questions pertaining to his band,
System of a Down. |
