Hey all,

So yesterday, beautiful day Smile Because Serj was in Amsterdam, here in the small country Holland...

Who of you have been there?

It really was a great performance, let's start from the begin...

1920 hours: We were waiting for Fair to Midland...
1940 hours: Still waiting
1941 hours: Still waiting

2000 hours: A lot of smoke, and then.. FAIR TO MIDLAND!!!
I really thought they sucked.. I don't like their songs etc. but I like Dance of the Manatee, and that was the last song they played -_-"
A lot of people were like.. WTF!!! GIMME SERJ!! XD But hey.. The longer we were waiting.. The more exciting Serj would be.. Wink

±2040 hours: They're rebuilding the stage.. waiting again Rolling Eyes
±2050-2100 hours: YES Very Happy Very Happy He's there.. Serj.. man I still can't believe I've seen him live Very Happy Very Happy He was really great Smile I don't remember the whole setlist.. but still, he started with The Unthinking Majority and then Empty Walls which were really great live!

So from now on I lost my count.. I dunno which came after this.. Because We Pulled Mosh Pits all the time -_-" which I really.. hated cuz I wanted to enjoy the show, and not to be squashed.. really, no! The people who did this and will read this: YOU RUINED THE SHOW FOR ME.. because, I lost my GF (no we didnt break up but I mean in the show Wink ) and another friend of mine.. and we were 3-4 metres from the stage, but after the mospits we were 5-6 metres from the stage, which made a big difference for me cuz I didn't had my Glasses with me -_-'

Further, he did Holiday, Charades (rock version) and some other song which I don't know the title of... XD

It reallly was a great performance Smile even with the mosh pits..
I think Serj is really good live, and still, I can't believe I've seen him Smile
He had some humour too.. When he introduced the band to us, he said: "We started to call this guy: Spacecake" which was the bassguitar I thought Wink

BTW, does someone has some good pictures?? because I don't, cuz of all the moshes and because I was 5-6 metres from the stage Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Damn, the show totally rocked! Personally I loved FTM, I think they did a great show, including all of Darroh's 'electrocution'-style movements. Poor guy nearly lost his voice during Dance of the Manatee, but made it through the song. I'm not quite sure which other songs they did, but I'd say they did about 7 songs, all of the Fables album.

Obviously Serj fucking rocked! I was about 10-15 meter from the stage, on the steps on the side. I have no idea on the order of the songs either (might still get a digital setlist sent to me), but I know he played every song of the album, plus as Yuma already said Holiday in Cambodia, rock Charades and the Beatles cover Girl, which was excellent! I do know the encore consisted of Money, Girl & Elect the Dead.

During the show Erwin, the keyboardist (who I've been talking to through MS), spotted Simon & me in the crowd. He put his up thumb and stuck out his tongue. Later on we had another moment where he waved at us.

During the introduction round, Serj indeed called bassplayer 'Super' Mario "Spacecake Mario" for the occasion. After Erwin played the intro to Money in the wrong key, Serj told him "you fucking stoner" as well, which made Erwin giggle.

Ofcourse Serj told us that we were a fucking amazing crowd. Luckily he didn't say that they hadn't played Money during other gigs, or I would've shouted out that he was lying!
There were lots of funny moments during the show, they were clearly enjoying themselves, which was great to see. I loved being able to see Serj's facial expressions and I bet the girls in the front row didn't mind the occasional look under his shirt either. Wink Mario & Erwin were taking pics & filmed the crowd a few times.

After the show fellow SOADFan Hanjza came over to me and we talked for a little bit, before we got our coats and went outside. Talked to a very charming Canadian for a bit and then waited for the band to come out.
After about 40 mins Erwin came outside, I called his name and he said "hey, I was looking for you!" We went over to the front door area and talked for almost half an hour, took a bunch of pics and he signed my copy of Elect the Dead. As we were talking to him two guys from FTM came outside as well. One of them quickly walked away again, but I did have my pic taken with Darroh.

When Erwin went back inside (after a dozen of hugs) he said he'd tell Serj to make sure to have his picture taken with me, because they weren't sure how many people they'd allow. There was only about 20 people waiting anyway, but it was kinda rainy.
I guess about half an hour later we were still waiting, I was talking to Hanjza and her friends when a piece of paper was shoved in my face. It was a personal note from Serj! Very Happy Erwin had come back to hand me that note. I wanted to hug him again, but then he kissed me on my cheek. =)

He then also said the band had left through the back of the venue, that Serj wouldn't show up anymore, so Simon, his wife, Erwin & I walked out of the small alley and a few streets further up said goodbye with wishes of a safe journey and another big hug.

The note says "Hello, I hope you had a good time tonight! Peace Serj" among some more personal things that I'd like to keep to myself. It was written on the back of a band schedule note from the Astoria gig last Thursday.

And yes, Erwin IS a nice guy! Very Happy

What a fun review, Yumatira & R_C! I thought of you on Sunday afternoon, thinking, oh about now, they should be watching Serj in Amsterdam......

Yeah, Yuma, I totally hear you about being squashed in the moshpit. It was totally worth it in order to be close enough to see up Serj's shirt (almost), but shoving back at the bastards crushing me definitely distracted me from the show.

And Erwin smiled & waved & gave me a thumbs up, too, during my show, and seemed happy to meet me after. It was truly priceless. He rocks!! So glad he was so awesome to hook up with you, Rainbow. And that personal note you got from Serj? Too good to be true! Can't wait to see your pics.

And I'm already jealous about FTM. I mean, Tom Morello as the Nightwatchman was very cool & inspiring. But I personally have been a big fan of FTM for some time & haven't gotten to see them live yet.

I'll have to go & check out the pictures now. Ciao!

I was there too! It was so great. I was on one of the balconies (the right one) and had taken some really nice pictures. After the show we waited too so I guess I'll probably standed a few meters away from you. It was so cold and rainy, it really sucked that Serj didn't show up. But the concert itself is one that we'll never forget, that's for sure!

Well, the Zak meister is taking his time with uploading my full review to the News section, so I'm just gonna post it here already.

******************************

Sunday November 25th 2007 is a day I’ll remember for quite some time! The reason why? A brilliant gig and a wonderful meeting afterwards.

But first things first.
Around 4pm Simon & his wife Cindy picked me up at home, and a little over an hour later we arrived to the centre of Amsterdam where we found a parking garage that wasn’t too far from the venue. The hard rain that had been falling had stopped by then and we checked out the little alley in which the Melkweg is situated. Some people were already queuing up, but we headed out for a bite to eat at a small Italian restaurant.

Shortly before 7pm we made our way back to the venue and not surprisingly, the queue had grown bigger, but not too bad, considering The Super Furry Animals were playing at the same venue that night. The doors opened shortly after 7 and while Simon waited in line to have our coats put away, Cindy & I made our way to the front of the steps.

More and more people came in, and luckily no-one stood right in front of me, so when a big cloud of smoke billowed in around 8pm, to mark the arrival of Fair To Midland, I had a good sight of the stage. Dressed in a simple black t-shirt and black jeans singer Darroh appeared to be just another ordinary guy, until he opened his mouth!

His voice is simply amazing, from singing regularly, to high shrieks and ofcourse the thundering roars! It all sounded great, all the while he was moving like crazy. His style is best described as electrocution-dancing, while both guitarist Cliff and bassist Jon jumped around like maniacs as well. I couldn’t see drummer Brett very well, as the drums were on ‘ground level’ but I could see keyboardist Matt, who plays with his keyboard turned over to the audience.

Simon pointed out that Darroh’s hair (which was quite a bit longer than in the pics I had seen of him and he’d grown a little moustache too) must’ve been thirsty, as he poured water over it a few times. Inbetween songs he would turn his back to the crowd and there were one or two times during songs that I wondered where he had gone, until I saw his feet in the air, giving new and literal meaning to ‘kicking and screaming’!

The guys played about 8 songs of their "Fables From A Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True" album, it appeared to me that not many people knew the album and were most enthusiast during their last song "Dance of the Manatee". During the roared ‘take a gander, the bigger they are the harder they fall’ lines, Darroh moved from side to side at which point his voiced croaked and he had to take it a little easier for the rest of the song.

In non-chronological order, I’m quite sure they played the following songs (unless I just listened to the album too often and therefore think the songs sounded so familiar):

Tall Tales Taste Like Sour Grapes
Vice-Versa
Upgrade^Brigade
Kayla Cries Cologne
A Seafarer’s Knot
April Fools & Eggmen
A Wolf Descends Upon The Spanish Sahara
Walls Of Jericho
Dance Of The Manatee

After they left the stage, all their equipment was quickly moved from the stage and the familiar yellow eye backdrop was revealed. More and more people came into the venue or decided to go grab a drink at the bar.

Around 9pm, after what has become known as "The Reverend King" was played, five black clad, top hatted men walked on to the stage and took place behind their instruments or put their gear over their shoulder. Soon after ringmaster Serj took to the stage himself, wearing simple black jeans, a nice white shirt, white jacket and battered white top hat, as well as bearing a huge smile on his face.

They started out with “The Unthinking Majority”’ and went straight into “Empty Walls”. A girl in the front row handed Serj a framed picture that he accepted by blowing her a little kiss. I’m sure she went nuts.

After Serj shortly took off his hat to make a bow and greeted the audience by saying ‘you guys are a fucking amazing audience’ he handed over his jacket and they continued with “Feed Us”. During a little speech about how ‘civilization will not return in the near future’ Serj sounded a little nasal, indicating a possible small cold.

With an intro of ‘all empires die’, they went into “Lie Lie Lie”, which saw Serj waving his top hat at the ‘my baby’ parts, marching during ‘take my hand…’ and even a combination of these during the ‘la la la lie lie lie‘ towards the end.

A red guitar was brought on stage and Serj put it over his hatted head, which proved a little difficult. Bassist Mario started filming the crowd from the stage, and “Saving Us” was started. I thought it was great looking at drummer Troy during this song.

Serj declared that music is of the universe and not of anything else. I felt this was a little contradictory from a guy who owns his own label, as record labels were amongst the things he mentioned.

When the band were introduced. What with them being in Amsterdam, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they had visited one or more of the famous coffee shops and with that, bassist ‘Super’ Mario got christened ‘Spacecake’ Mario for the occasion. (For those of you who don’t know what spacecake is, let’s just say it’s a ‘special’ kind of cake with funny herbs in it.) Both he and Erwin took pics of each other and the crowd during the gig.

After perfect renditions of “Baby” and “Sky Is Over” Serj divided the crowd to chant ‘praise the lord’ on one side and ‘pass the ammunition’ on the other side before the strange sounds of said song filled the room, with a great rock version of “Charades” straight after, which saw Erwin rocking out behind his keyboard.

For “Honking Antelope” Erwin made room for Serj to take place behind the keyboard, while he moved to another set of keys. Serj took a pic of the crowd right before the song started and it was towards the end that Erwin spotted Simon & me. Having talked to him for a little while on MySpace prior to the gig, this meant a familiar face in the crowd and we were greeted with some pointing, a ‘thumbs up’ and tongue out.

Right after they went crazy with the Dead Kennedy’s cover of “Holiday In Cambodia”. That song definitely made Serj's shirt move a lot, with a perfect view on quite a bit of tanned flesh. Wink Serj then recited a cute little poem, that finished with ‘…Beethoven’s little CUNT!!’ so the song of that title came by. It was also the last song of the regular set, as the guys all walked off the stage while the crowd was roaring in appreciation that quickly turned into a ‘we want more!’ chant.

Some five minutes later they all returned to the stage. Serj was smoking a joint that he passed on to guitarist Larry, but I missed out on this because Erwin was gesturing at me again.

Erwin then started tinkering away on his keyboard, before quickly stopping again when he realised it was played in the wrong key and starting again. Serj turned around and said ‘fucking stoner keyboardist guy..!’ to which they both giggled.

We realised this was “Money”, one of the songs that they only played during the European dates. Straight after we were treated to a stunning cover of the Beatles song “Girl” that Serj started out with a little waltzy dance. I didn’t think I knew the song when I had read in other reviews that they did this song, but I found myself singing along to the chorus nevertheless.

Five black clad men bowed and after throwing drum sticks & picks in the crowd they left the stage. This left Serj by himself to perform the final song of the concert, the beautiful “Elect the Dead”.
Serj then bowed to the crowd (as he had done a few times during the gig as well) and left, leaving us in the dark.

It felt like time had been speeded up, as it seemed to have gone really quick. However, it was a great gig and from where we stood we had excellent sight without being crushed. I could see all of the facial expressions, which I loved, as well as seeing the guys enjoy themselves during the gig.

When the lights went on again and people started to rush out, I was approached by fellow SOADFan Hanjza and we talked for a little. While waiting for our coats I got to talk to crazy but kind Canadian Sean for a couple of minutes and then we headed outside.

The bus & truck stood behind some gates, but we could peek inbetween. The crew walked in & out with a shitload of boxes and trunks for about 20 mins when I saw that Erwin came walking outside. I said ‘Heyyy Erwin!’ which was greeted with a ‘Hi, I was looking for you!’
We walked over to the front door area where we could talk more comfortably.

We talked about a million things; it kinda felt like meeting an old friend again after a long time. He even said ‘you haven’t changed much since.. oh.. your picture on MySpace!’ It was very relaxed, we laughed a lot, took a dozen pics, hugged many times, he signed our cds and when two guys from Fair To Midland came outside he talked with them for a little.
One of them had quickly walked on, but I politely asked Darroh (Andrew to his mother) if he was in a hurry before I asked him if he would mind to have his picture taken with me. I felt a bit sorry for the other guy that I hadn’t recognised him, but I guess from all the people that were standing outside, no-one really realised who Erwin was either.

After about 20 or 30 minutes, Erwin went back inside again. He hugged us again and said he’d tell Serj to at least have his picture taken with me when he was gonna come outside. Apparently security was really tight and didn’t allow much, or a lot of time to see everyone. There were only about 20 people waiting outside anyway, but it was rainy. Not that I would mind standing under an umbrella (ella, ella, eh eh eh) with Serj.

We stayed outside waiting for another half hour or so. Hanjza was still there as well, so we talked a bit more, when all of a sudden someone shoved a piece of paper under my nose. Erwin had come outside again to hand me this note, which had a personal message from Serj on it! I thought that was so sweet of him, that I wanted to hug Erwin again, but then he kissed my cheek. A favour I couldn’t resist returning. =)

He then also said the band had left through the back of the venue, that Serj wouldn't show up anymore, so Simon, Cindy, Erwin & I walked out of the small alley and a few streets further up said goodbye with wishes of a safe journey and another big hug.
