I think that song is about getting old and about trying o break out from the aging process and live how long you want to.

No. Your own pace is an internet bullshit name. It comes from the toxicity sessions. Back then no one knew names for the tracks so they just called it your own pace. It was probably mixed up with the 1997 recording session version.

But knave was right. It was always called "36" or ".36" .

I always thought that the song is about how television dictates your life and thoughts. Advertising causes races on new products etc. . You're always urged to pick up the pace with the everchanging life-style promoted by mass media.
So Serj demands you to "live at your own pace". You should have a real life again! (Life, so, unnecessary)

^^^ He's right.

36 was originally .36 (caliber, anyone?)

I was thinking that System just didn't find anywhere to put it until STA, so when they did find a place to fit it, they just threw away the . and made it just 36, to suit whatever the conditions were; maybe it was for their 36th song, or maybe they threw it in there for Serj's 36th birthday!

And, on Steal This Album, on the little CD for the album cover it says CD-36. I don't know if that's relevant to anything about the song meaning, but I just caught that.
