So for those of you who don't know, there are supposed "secret" track orders for Tool's Lateralus album which are supposed to reveal hidden stories, so last night I decided to get baked out of my mind and try it. The order is 6,7,5,8,4,9,3,10,2,11,1,12,13 and is title "The Lateralus Prophecy". So here's a basic overview of what I came up with:
In Parabol and Parabola Maynard is describing the love he found, and how it makes him feel a divine connection, and as if all his pain is an illusion.
Then it transitions perfectly into Schism, which describes in a nutshell, how his relationship was doomed to crumble unless they strengthened their communication.
Ticks and Leeches goes on to describe how his resentment and frustration are eating away under his skin like a tick, making him bitter and indifferent.
Mantra can be interpreted differently here, as either the sound of his agony, or the sound of choking which he mentions previously in Ticks and Leeches.
In Lateralus, Maynard describes how his personal philosophies have now changed from simply seeing the world in Black and White to a much more complicated world which is reaching out to him and asking him to "push the envelope" meaning to change is own reality. In order to do this, he must dismiss all of his intuitions and seperate body from mind in order to reach a state of human divinity which is greater than the holy presence he felt earlier in Parabol / Parabola.
In light of this, The Patient is pretty self - explanatory. The journey is difficult and tedious and he is having second thoughts about doing this, but decides to wait it out and go through with it.
In Disposition, he feels as though he is missing some key element which is preventing him from reaching his goal. "Mention this to me and watch the weather change."
At the beginning of Reflection, he seems to have given up and feels lost in his "self-indulgent pitiful hole". Then suddenly in his darkest moment, he has a revelation, realizing that rather than trying to find the holy light to fill oneself, we all must instead reflect the "source" of the light which I think could either mean the Earth or God depending on how you look at it. In any case, he decides that he must adapt total selflessness and relinquish himself to the lightsource before he pines away.
In The Grudge, Maynard emplores the listener to let go of grudges because in the end they will always bring you down, then basically repeats that idea throughout the song.
Now, the only thing that doesn't fit with the rest of the storyline is Faaip de Oiad but if anyone has any theories after reading this, let me know. Also, this is just my personal interpretation of The Lateralus Prophecy...a lot of people mention the "true" meaning of it and if anyone is familiar with this, please do share Thanks for reading if you made it this far. |

I agree that there's an overall point to Lateralus.
"Faaip De Oiad means "voice of God" in latin if I'm not mistaken, but the actual lyrics in the song don't seem to fit with the theme you suggested. The only thing I can't think of is that FDO might be second to last, like it may be the "negativity" referred to in The Grudge. |

| Yeah Gorillaman, I never used to really think about Tool's song meanings either cause even without really thinking about the meaning, they're songs are still really good. But when you delve deep into them, they get even better which is true with all good music, really. Same with Pink Floyd, System of a Down, etc the list goes on. |

| There's not a Lateralus Prophecy. The song order you provided is the actual order the songs should have been in because all of the songs in the Lateralus album follow the Fibonacci sequence. I don't know if you have read about the Fibonacci sequence, but it goes like this :each number on the sequence is the sum of its two previous ones. The song Lateralus itself is sung using that sequence, that is: 1 syllable, 2 syllables, 3 syllables, then 5 syllables, then 8 , then 13 and so on. Sing the lyrics according to the sequence and you will see what I am talking about. The whole album is about evolving and spiraling out to reach new depths of consciousness, to live our lives by spiraling out just like the Fibonacci sequence suggests, which goes on to the infinite. That means that in this order, and not the one the album has, the end of each song matches the beginning of the next one. |
