Last night one of my dreams came true.
I got to see Serj Tankian live.
He opened for the Foo Fighters along with a band called Against Me!

My seats weren't great, but I could see and hear everything, so that was good enough for me. Against Me! opened right on time at 7:00. They really only have one good song IMO and that is Thrash Unreal. That was good, but other than that, they weren't very good.

Finally it was time. The Against Me! banner dropped to reveal Serj's backdrop (sorry for the poor image quality, the camera on my phone sucks) :

A few minutes later, the lights dim and the FCC minus Serj walked on stage to assume their positions at their respective instruments. The Reverend King was playing, but I could tell it was just a recording. It was still dark, but I made out Serj walking onto stage sporting his white blazer and top hat. As the Reverend King ended the first chords of The Unthinking Majority played, then the lights blasted as Serj screamed an extended, “POW!” They played The Unthinking Majority, and then went straight into Empty Walls. “What’s up Massachusetts?!” yelled Serj at the concluding of Empty Walls, “Thank you very much for having me!” Then they played Feed Us. After that, Serj asked, “How many of you have seen the movie Borat?” A lot of people cheered. Then he asked, “And how many have seen the play, or at least the film version of Romeo and Juliet?” More applause. “When you put those two together, you get….Lie, Lie, Lie, Lie, Lie!!!” then they went right into Lie, Lie, Lie. He ended it with a sick scream.
Serj thanked the Foo Fighters for having him, then said that the next song was a romantic song “for you”, which was kinda weird because it sounded like by “you”, he meant the Foo Fighters. I dunno if he meant to do that or not. Anyway, the “romantic song” was Saving Us with Serj sporting the red guitar. After that, Serj gave his “music comes from the universe, not just the artist, it belongs to all of us” speech before playing Baby. Then they played Sky is Over, and HOLY FUCKING SHIT, THERE WAS A NEW SONG!!!!!!!!!! I’m not kidding. This song was brand new; I had never heard it before. It started as a poem, and kind of evolved into a full band song. I was not expecting that, it was a real treat. The song was pretty abstract like most of his musical versions of poems (i.e. The Revered King). I don’t remember much of the song, but I remember it was about the sounds of war and bombs falling from the sky and killing children. I recorded a bit of it on my cell phone if you want a little taste. The quality is extreme shit, but if you want, you can download it here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/hbu76x
EDIT: The song is allegedly called Sounds Of War and you can download a live video and mp3 of it else ware on these forums.
Then for the intro to PTLAPTA, Serj did the whole, “For centuries, government and religion….” And then, “pRaIsE the Lord! Pass the ammunition!” over and over faster and faster, and then “Well I say ‘FUCK YOU’ to that kind of hypocrisy!” Then after Praise the Lord…, Serj dropped to his knees for the Beethoven’s Cunt intro. You know, the, “it reminds me of Beethoven’s little…CUNT!” That was the last song in the set. The drummer didn’t spaz out and destroy the drum set like I’ve seen in one of the videos, but he did throw a bunch of sticks into the crowd.
“Thank you very much Massachusetts!” yelled Serj as he walked off stage with the rest of the Flying Cunts of Chaos.
It was so amazing; I almost started tearing up a bit.
I wasn’t expecting them to play Money or Elect the Dead, but I was a little surprised that they didn’t play Honking Antelope. It was ok though because I got to hear some new material which I wasn’t expecting at all.

I know this is a Serj forum, but I gotta write a little about the Foo Fighters. They were fucking amazing. They played for two hours. A circular stage descended from the ceiling on the other end of the stadium. There was a boardwalk connecting the two stages. Dave Grohl was amazing and also really funny. He told a lot of jokes and a funny story and things like that. They “ended” with All Me Life, then after about 5 or 6 minutes or blackness, on the screens, you could see a video of the set list through a night vision lens. The camera zoomed out and Grohl was holding it and the bottom was folded up so you couldn’t see what was after All My Life. They ended up playing a three song encore that consisted of Big Me, Long Road to Ruin and then finally, Best of You.

The concert was amazing and one the best nights of my life. I bought both a Serj and Foo’s t-shirt to remember the show by.

I really hope Serj comes back here next year!

~Peace

Err, the I can't convert the video to anything else, it won't let me. You should be able to play it in quicktime though. You can download the latest version free online. The quality of the video is extreme shit and it's only 15 seconds just to warn you though.
I wish I had some more information on it.

I was hoping for Serj to join the Foo Fighters during their set to play Holiday in Cambodia, but alas, it was not played.

We never thought we’d be as successful as we are. It was kind of a shock
