I'm very certain that Serj is talking about a war that happened in Lebanon. I guess the 2006 Lebanon-Israel Conflict , anyway . . . The parts I can easily understand are :
One by one they came from the sky ,like children from a womb
these are the bombs that were dropped in several areas
to paint the skyline before dawn , before dawn , before daaaaaaaawn !
if you watched the news back then , you would have seen a destroyed building , and from it coming black smoke , rising into the sky , PAINTING IT BLACK ! and I remember several strikes happening in the middle of the night
nobody knew why the children of the sea were being booooooombed to smitherines !
Lebanon rests on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea , yes a sea , thus they're " the children of the sea " . And by nobody knowing why , he doesn't mean politically , he means , these families don't know why they are being bombed , they didn't do anything wrong

smashing across the dark surfaces of a building outlined by the vast Mediterranean mooooooon !
they smashed buildings at night , and since we're in Lebanon , which is alongside the Mediterranean coast , this moon is , THE MEDITERRANEAN MOON !
children screaming ! under the rubbles ! with no help ! no aid in sight !
people were trapped under buildings , and since it was late at night during this bombing , the red cross might not be aware of this , cause they're asleep , or , there are millions of others in need of help , and they are too busy to help these particular children
(something I'm not hearing clearly ) for they are God's true only children
he's praising the victims for their innocence
we need to restrain . . .the avarice of war
we need to , take away Hezbollah's weapons , as to stop them from declaring more wars on Israel , and make peace with our neighbors instead of trying to conquer them
yes , I can make a connection , I believe that Serj thinks dearly of his birthplace and would make a song calling for peace in it , and I think this might be it |

Yeah I think he might have had this in mind when he wrote that song, esp. when you think of him being born in Lebanon... would be another question for our questions-video, huh?!  |

another thing , after " chilfren screaming . . . no aid in sight " Serj is singing " Maaaamaaaa , maaaamaaa , maaamaa "
" mama " is Arabic for " mother " or " momny " or just " mom " , so , the screaming children seem to speak Arabic , hmmmm , so now I think I'm sure where this is happening |

It's not uncommon for little kids in the US to call their mom Momma or Mommy or their dad Daddy or Dadda. I still call my mom Momma and I always called my Dad Daddy. Even so long after his death that is how my siblings and I refer to him in conversation. Also in Spanish, kids call their mom Mama.
Serj may have been thinking about Afghanistan, Lebanon or Iraq when he was writing the song, as that is where the violence is or has been recently. But war is the same everywhere. Nasty business.
My husband grew up in a war zone in Guatemala, so he's accustomed to jungle war instead of urban warfare. But he has war stories that would chill anyone's bones.
I love Serj's Sounds of War, BTW. I hope it gets some air play. I'm very worried that the US and Israel are going to bomb the tar out of Iran. It's all about profit and control--and a lot of people get killed and maimed in the process. The people in the US and Israeli government pushing war against Iran must have no conscience at all. |

I think mama, mamma is very general, it's in germanic and uralic languages at least some of them. Calling mother earth who's children we are and we are idiots, that's how I feel. I think Mediterranean might be just pure chance, like what else he could say? On the other in the area near by Mediterranean, Mid-East there have been lot of clashes... to say it in nice way.
Lyrics reminds me of Star wars... and all other wars where pilots are used, no unfair missiles...those are lame.
I've tried to listen it from coachella but I don't know what he says in that one part..  |
