This is not an easy case! So you quarreled over it with your father, that Serj called it a terrorist!
There are frictions at us! A mom says that Serj could be my grandfather always, though Serj only 40 year! The trouble of his that I like it Serj! I talked about him to a mom so much that a mom should hate him very much! My elder brother says ugly ones about him if I fall out with him! But I stand by Serj always! He does not deserve that they should talk about him in this manner! Serj very good and quasi perfect man!! |

Then he happened to walk into the room just as the video for "Empty Walls" began. Now my dad doesn't joke. He told me later that if Serj was the type to laugh at 9/11 (in reference to the first scene of Empty Walls), then Serj would laugh at the Holocaust (my dad is Jewish, so that really says something. But still, that is A GROSS LIE AND WE ALL KNOW SERJ IS BETTER THAN THAT.) It's not like he takes every opportunity to remind me of this, but if the conversation at dinner turns to Serj (which it does very rarely), he will slip in some reference to his views. I did try telling him "I don't like it when you make jokes about him being a terrorist.", but he just came back saying "Really? Then he shouldn't make videos like that!"
Before you type a reply, PLEASE don't try and tell me that he's a terrible person. Despite this divided view, I love my dad. I just get so pissed off when he makes those jokes and I'm trying to fix this in a way that will involve little-to-no yelling. If this makes any difference, I live with both parents, and while my mom hates Serj's voice too, she has no other opinion of him.
So do you guys think there is anything that can help so that my dad can see that he has some serious rethinking to do? I don't even care if my dad lives the rest of his life not liking Serj's music: I just want him to stop calling Serj a terrorist.
it's his opinion get over it, seriously. Why does it even matter what he thinks about someone you don't even know. If you're yelling over something like that and arguing that's just sad. |

Apart from agreeing with blahx, the straight but difficult solution to your problem would be that your father gets more intelligent. I mean, every person that deals with Serj's lyrics in a serious way must understand how he thinks about injustice, genocide, war and all the other bad things in our world.
I mean, he just said that America should not be too surprised about 9/11 and that's nothing but true. I would not be too surprised if something like that would happen in Germany as well. The highly developed countries terrorize the less developed countries with our domination of the world economy, it's just that we don't do it the same obvious way some splinter cells from the middle east do it. |

I have a mom like that. Lebanese = TERRORIST for her. And Empty Walls and his statements didn't help make things easier. I almost wasn't able to even receive Cool Gardens as a gift. She hates his voice for being too high, whatever...
Anyways. Point is, you can't do anything. They're parents and they have their reasons. Your father will continue to hate not like Serj. All you can do is try not to talk about him too much and save yourself lots of arguing and drama. I learned that the hard way. Let him go on thinking Serj is out to get us all with his evil do-er mustache and cynical brown eyes   |

My dad makes terrible racist jokes about everything that I love and respect :/
My mom's opinion about Serj:
+ he's best looking from soad (she said that Daron looks like ugly frog 'coz his eyes  /  )
- she can't stand Serj's voice, she says it's terrible shouting (pretty much as bad as sorta death metal)
My plan to convert my parents:
1. tell how old they are (works especially with my mom.. dad is kinda meh)
2. tell about their political views/awareness
3. Serj had proper education and had proper job before soad
not so sure about pot using though I've managed quite well make parents accept it
Try play mellow songs without cursing... |

You beat me to it! I was just going to suggest renting the Screamers DVD and watching it with your dad.
And then maybe you can explain to your dad that the 9/11 symbolism in the Empty Walls vid is intentional, but it isn't making fun of the terrorist attack. In fact it's showing innocent children "replaying the event" and the events that followed, emphasizing GW Bush's blunders in Iraq (which had nothing to do with the 9/11 attack).
And your dad totally needs to see the end of that video, with a nearly-in-tears Serj and the children watching sadly as the coffin of another fallen soldier is being transported.
Of course, if your dad is some kind of Bush-worshiping Republican, this all might not be such a good idea. Just watch Screamers. |
