Well, I'm new to the forums, and though I may as well share my interpretation of Mr. Jack. I've kind of...re-worded the lyrics to try and get my point across a little differently than explicitly stating what the lyrics mean to me, but I've tried to make them as expliticit as possible in terms of meaning.
Hey Mr. Jack
Is that the mouthwash in your eyes?
Hey Mr. Jack, does looking hurt you? Are you blind?
Hey Mr Jack
Is that the cause of your surprise?
Hey Mr. Jack, are you surprised because you realize that you can't see?
Hey where you at?
on the side of the freeway in the car
Hey where you at?
On the side of the freeway in the CAR
In the car
On the side of the freeway in the
Hey, where are you?
Outside of the mainstream, refusing to move? Ignorant to what the world thinks, able to know, but choosing not to? (The car could theoretically move with the rest of the cars on the freeway, presumably a lot, ergo the large scale)
Hey Mr Jack
Is that the trick of your disguise?
Hey Mr. Jack, is your ignorance all it takes for you to put on your disguise?
Hey Mr Jack
Is that the cause of your demise?
Hey Mr. Jack, is your ignorance the cause of your demise?
Hey where you at?
on the side of the freeway in the car
Hey where you at?
On the side of the freeway in the CAR
In the car
On the side of the freeway in the CAR
In the car
On the side of the freeway in the car
In the car...
(See first chorus)
7 AM, morning
Came to take us away
Early in the game, they came to take us away. OR When everyone woke up/wisened up (7 is a pretty standard wake up time), they came to take us away.
Little men, big guns, pointed at our heads
The ones we least expected/the common people/the seemingly harmless rose up, with weapons that were deadly in their hands, and used the weapons against us.
7 Am, morning
Came to take us away
Little men, big guns, pointed at our heads
AT OUR, at our heads
(See above)
Your prospect of living gone
You have damned yourself.
You ran the light at dawn
You did something you shouldn't have right as people learned to/became able to see that is was wrong. OR you did something you shouldn't have in a way that started to make it obvious/when it started to become obvious.
Protectors on your back
Those still loyal to you are following you (if "on your back" means about the same as "at your back"). OR Even those who were once loyal to you have now turned (if "on your back" implies a chase, similar to "at your heels").
Lights are on the track
You're running a predictable path to try and get away. OR We/they are on to you.
You must deface authority/You must now face authority
(To me, at least, it sounds like it could be either) (If "now face") It's time to answer for your crimes. (If "deface") It's time for us to drag you in/away kicking and screaming to punish you.
You're nothing like me
You and I are nothing alike; I do not know what your answers will be, you must tell me.
You must deface authority/You must now face authority
You're nothing like me
(See above)
Put your hands up, get out of the car!
We've caught you, now give up and answer for your actions.
Put your hands up, get out of the car!
Put your hands up, get out of the car!
(See above)
FUCK YOU PIG!
No!
FUCK YOU PIG!
FUCK YOU PIG!
FUCK YOU PIG!
(See above)
PUT YOUR HANDS UP, GET OUT OF THE CAR!
(See above, but this implies more of a final warning)
Whilst I admit that this may not be what SOAD intended for the song to be about- if that's been said somewhere, I've missed it- but this is just what I got out of Mr. Jack. |

| There are some SOAD songs where the meanings are kinda obvious, this is one of those. |

| Yeah, though it's a quite obvious song,it's good to know that people try to interpret it in their own way,and actually succeed. So,good interpretation. |

Being honest, i think that you looked way too far into this. You have to interprate the song as a WHOLE and not line by line. You make no sense doing it line by line.
My interpretation of it would be that Mr. Jack is an undercover Fed watching over 'the narrator' (Serj) as he goes about his daily business. He is waiting on the side of the freeway in the carrrrrr (got a bit of the song in there!!)
The '7:00 a.m.' section to me means that the Feds (the little men with big guns) have found Serj and are going to take him away because of his outspoken and anarchist nature.
'Your perfect almighty God' section onwards tells me that the Fed thinks that he above the law and can do anything that he wants.
'The put your hand up get out of the car' section to the end to me means that Serj has been caught and is about to be taken away to prison because he knows too much.
Thats my view. Its more logical and makes more sense.
(btw 'Your prospect of living gone' is actually 'Your perfect almighty God') |

Wow can't believe I had...um...forgotten about this. Time to respond to all the nice people who posted
ElectTheSOAD- thanks
LeftShoe18- Also thanks
brotherbroseph- there is no "the meaning" to any song. There are two distinct categories of meaning: what the artist intended when they wrote the song and how any given person will interpret it. This is just what I got out of the song and I don't really care if it's not the meaning SOAD put into it.
Nephthys- I do have a habit of deviating from the norm when it comes to thoughts and interpretations, so I'm not apt to do much else than read deeply into something
suite-pee1915- Okay, I can see where the bit about "don't do it line by line" comes in, and that's not what I meant to do; if you read the print I put there under each line of the song, it's a bit more of a "translated" version of the song. I should probably add somewhere at the end that the general theme as I see it is how a blinded authority will eventually be disposed of. And I admit that your interpretation makes a good deal of sense, though listening to the song I'm 100% certain Tankian's saying "Your prospect of living gone," plus that's what this site lists as the official lyrics.
eggbeater- Okay...well, as the theme of critical responses seems to be, I could be digging too deeply and it could be about cops in LA or something.
SystemofaDownisHot- Yeah I should probably try to be more active than a post a month, but I'm more used to small forums/communities where everyone really knows everyone else, so a larger forum like this will take a bit of adjusting. But, I'll make it, I hope |
