I think it means that Evangelicals are no longer captivating people as easily as they use to, as it being the sign of the times (in 3005).
Not necessarily anti-Christian, but more of an observation. I specify Evangelicals because he says "junkies" and that would imply one who would be gnawing the word and 24/7.
