I figured this was a good question to ask here, as I have a project for it for sociology and I know that there are people from all over the world here. So the question is essentially YOUR opinion of whether you are essentially free in society to make your own path, or if the government is interfering perhaps without your knowledge. For those of you who will immediately debunk that idea, remember that the ideal way of controlling all the power over people would be to create the illusion that they are in power, am I wrong? So I'm just asking people this question, along with some side points..
Do you think you would rise up against the government if they exercised power beyond their control and commenced martial law? Do you think others would?
Can you recall experiences where the government has exercised power beyond their control and gotten away with it?
Do you think age or gender has anything to do with someone's chance of standing up against the government? Who and why?
Thanks guys. I don't think I'll use you guys for an example for my paper, I just wanted to get some thoughts going because this is very interesting to me. |

Well...the government is made up of people, so in theory, the people are in control. In practice, it might be different.
If the government rose up, then we, the people, have the right to remove it.
I think. If there is not enough widespread support to rise up against the gov., then I guess I'll go to another place.
I now some examples, but I just can't remember them right now...
What do you mean by that?
As in standing up to government by using reform, or revolution? |

No, you're not wrong. In fact, the way I see it is - you ARE indeed 'free' in society to make your own path, you can do whatever you want. Unfortunately, 'free' in the sense that you believe you're right to do whatever without consequence, that's a different story.

Yes, I would. Not sure about others, though.

Yeah, to some extent.

After permits were granted, there were fees that (I can't remember which) the city of Washington or the commonwealth of Virginia were trying to impose, in order for the organization (answer - including anyone who was attending) to use the streets to demonstrate. So after a lot of opposition, they dropped the fees.
But, and I don't know quite how to say, there were many different ways in which people were trying to ... hmm ... let's say ... make it harder for demonstrators. I'm not saying everything they did was by force, but particularly when the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition tries to organize things like these, it's not too welcomed.
Oh, I just noticed something in the article, too..
Quote:
They also blocked buses from accessing the Pentagon in contravention of the agreements reached in the permit. This required people to walk nearly two miles to get to their buses following the rally.
I forgot all about it.
Thing is, when our bus driver was trying to get to the drop off point, we were redirected to evacuate the bus because they were looking to give drivers tickets.

I don't think so, no.

Well, even if you're not going to use what we say to you as an example (and maybe I just wasted my time, I don't know! )... there ya go.
I can't cast a vote, though, sorry. |

Of course i would, and some dude talked to me and said he would to, so yes.

Yes. My ancient world history teacher last year was telling us about our current government. One of the topics was how Dick Cheney pulled all of his family out of the list for people to be randomly called if the draft was put back in place. (Or something along those lines) There are many other examples for people to look up also.

Obviously children under the age of 10 cannot do much to stand up against their government. |

I believe that people in US society are free to make their own path within certain limits. We endure the limits of the law. We are freer here than in many other societies.

What do you mean by power beyond their control? The US invasion/occupation of Iraq created a situation that they can't control. Martial law? Wow. I don't know. My resistence would depend on how the martial law was impacting me and my family--and what kind of consequences would result from my resistence. Understand that I have a child and husband who need me.

There's the invasion/occupation of Iraq. After Hurricane Katrina, the Feds forced some people out of their homes when they were in no danger. Soldiers and Blackwater troopers also stole personal weapons from people in areas affected by the Hurricane--even if they were only keeping the guns for self-defense. Disarming the public is a violation of the constitution.

Probably. Younger people are more likely to resist because they have the energy and the rebelliousness. Women with children are probably less likely to resist. Our children's immediate safety is our primary concern.

Best of luck with your paper. It sounds like an interesting project. |

No, I would probably leave given the chance. Others probably would, but in most likelihood if they commenced martial law, they wouldn't be rising against them for very long.

Forty two day detention periods = United Kingdom.

Not really, I guess it just depends on a person's mindset. |
