Just a question that's been buzzing in my head and it's really something to think about.
I'll be buzzing around forums, like Ultimate Guitar, and I'll see people ripping on bands for any little error they make. Most of the time, it's because they feel a band member is an asshole.
For example I'll hear stuff like "I hate Yngwie Malmsteen, he's an arrogant prick and all he does it play fast!" but then they'll turn around and worship Paul Gilbert or Kirk Hammet. Main difference I see, are their personalities. Yngwie, while technically proficient (and contrary to popular belief, CAN play with emotion) he's also a bit arrogant. Both Paul and Kirk can play really well, but both suffer form their own noticeable problems with the guitar. (Paul tends to play in boxes and Kirk's foot seems to be welded to the wah peddle). However, you rarely see them get berated with insults and their music dismissed with just the sound of their name.
Now, it's very possible that one can just not like their music - just not their style - and it's totally fine. I just rarely ever hear people not liking certain artists and them not ripping every aspect of them apart.
Question I'm asking to you guys is: Are you able to enjoy an artist's music, despite your thoughts on their personalities? Or do you find yourself ripping apart anything they put out. (Sometimes it's subconscious, so give it some thought)
I try to be weary of myself to doing this. For instance, I think Lars Ulrich is one of the biggest douches in the history of forever, but I'm still able to enjoy Metallica. Same with Megadeth and U2. I think Dave Mustaine and Bono have turd-like personalities (though, I've been digging Dave lately) but I listening to their albums everyday.
Thoughts? |

| I really don't care about the personalities either. I mean, if they put out bitchin music, does it really matter if they're total assholes in person? It's not like you're going to be talking to them every day. If someone is a douchebag, you just won't worship the ground the walk on. Doesn't make their music sound any worse tho. |

To me, I feel that if an artist is an ass hole, they do music for honor and not because they're real musicians. They want the money and the fame. If an artist does it because they truly love music, etc., then they won't be ass holes and so their music is naturally better anyways. That is just my opinion...
Or maybe I have just been lucky to like artists that are good people (good is one of those words that has so many different meanings I know...).....
I think artists will, no matter what, gain an audience. However, I think that the better people who make better music will have... more dedicated fans? Although I can't explain people like Hannah Montana... hmmm |

I understand what you mean yeah....
If I listen to a band and enjoy them but then I find out a member is a prick it might sort of bother me for a while but then I'll get over it and enjoy the music again |

I'm not bothered by artists being assholes, generally speaking - I don't have to live with them. As long as their music kicks ass, they can do what they like.
I'm more concerned about heavy drug habits, because that not only affects the music in the long run, but...accidents can happen. |

It might peeve me but if the music is good I can still enjoy it. Hey, I still listen to SOAD
When it comes to musicians I look up to though, as in admiring them and being inspired by them, I can say that the list is free of arrogant people and drug addicts who play live show after live show strung out and are more known for wild antics than really their playing. That's not a conscious thing but I recently discovered that while talking to friends about musicians that inspire me and make me want to go out and make music again. |

| If i don't like an artists personality, i don't read anything about them. I don't read articles or interviews about them and just listen to the music they put out. No need to cause myself stress. There are a few exceptions, but not many. |

although its all about music and enjoying what the ear hear but..
No...
the way the artist act, life , personality & the way they deal/treat their fans can completely make myself drop the support for such an artist |

Mostly I am.
I had that Yngwie Malmsteen-thing too.He seems to be a bit arrogant, but he's also quite down to earth.(downs't make sense.)
He had a performance at a childrens' show in Sweden. What kind of shredder would do that?
Oh, and the people on ultimate-guitar all seems to have the smae opinion. That scares me. |
