Hai.

This is the first time I have ever posted a 'song meaning', but this one just struck me today. It may have been discussed already however, and my idea might not be 'original' xD But I'll explain it anyway.

It's very simple. I think Blue is about an opiate addict). I was just reading a very old book called 'Confessions of an English Opium-Eater'(written in 1821). It is an interesting book, that's for sure, as the title would suggest,i t's written from the perspective of someone who went through an opium addiction.

Quote:

And at that time I often fell into these reveries upon taking opium; and more than once it has happened to me, on a summer night, when I have been at an open window, in a room from which I could overlook the sea at a mile below me, and could command a view of the great town of L-, at about the same distance, that I have sate from sunset to sunrise, motionless, and without wishing to move.

I read this paragraph (taking particular notice of the first sentence in the quote here), and the lyric 'can I escape my blue fallen reverie?' immediately came to mind. So I decided to look through the lyrics of blue, and it became very clear to me that Serj is singing from the perspective of an addict.

Okay this is gonna take a bit of explaining but I'll try my best to "state my case", as it were.

I think the song is about the low points of an opium(or any opiate) addict's life, sung from the perspective of the addict, and the song goes through stages representing the mind set and feelings of an addict.
The points which I think represent when the addict is high, are also explaining at the same time that he is imprisoned by his addiction. and he is 'Wishing it' to go away.
Quote:
I'm.... wishin' and wishin' away at you god
I'm.... wishin' and wishin' away at you god
Okay, just before the lyrics, the music is very chilled out, even the way the lead guitar strings are plucked just gives off a very.. opiate-high feeling- a state of relaxation, if you will. When serj starts singing, his voice carries on the overall feeling of the intro.

I believe this part is representing the person being high on opium, but still tormented by his own demons. He wants it to all stop, he wants God to intervene.
Quote:

I don't see nothing but pain and misery, cause you are the one for me
Why can't it all be true? Can I escape with my blue fallen reverie?
Why can't it all be true? Why can't it all be true?

Now this is a completely different tempo, and basically changes the entire sound of the song. Everything takes on a different mood, the guiter, serj's voice, the drums all become sporadic and almost angry.

I think this is when he starts to go into withdrawels. His mind is racing, perhaps he is even trying to stop taking the drug, but he can't let go.

Quote:

I'm.... wishin' and wishin' away at you god
I'm.... wishin' and wishin' away at you god
Again he gives in to the drug, and goes back to his woeful pleas, that he wants to stop taking the drug.

Quote:

Suddenly, I believe you are the one for me
Graciously you flow through my closed hearts artery
Can I escape with my blue fallen reverie?
Why can't it all be true? Why can't it all be true?
This part of the song is the most revealing. The line 'graciously you flow through my closed heart's artery' is just .. blatant as to what he is refering to.
There is also another version of the song that says something like ' move through my pores' or something like that, and I still think he is refering to the drug spreading throughout his body.
He also says at the beginning of this verse 'Suddenly, I believe you are the one for me'. I believe he is talking about the drug, here.
Quote:

I've been wishin' away at you god, I've been wishin' away at you
I've been wishin' away at you god

In this part, you'll notice the song doesn't follow the same pattern as before, and the 'angry sound' is carried on from the previous verse. I think perhaps this time he is really trying his best to get clean, has given up on begging God, perhaps he has given up religion intirely because he has yet to see any improvement in his life. This might be looking too much into the use of the name 'God'. God could be in this case a many number of abstract things, so let's not focus on that part too much.

Quote:

I don't see nothing but pain and misery, cause you are the one for me
Why can't it all be true? Can I escape with my blue fallen reverie?
Why can't it all be true? Why can't it all be true?

Not much to explain here, as I already did before.
Quote:

I'm.... wishin' and wishin' away at you god
I'm.... wishin' and wishin' away at you god
He's fallen back into the loop of addiction again, he sounds more tired this time though.

Quote:
At you god, at you god………at you god

I've been trying to figure out the meaning behind this final part, because I think it has a significance, but I feel I might end up going in circles if I began to try explain it from my point of view.

Another reason that I think this song took inspiration from a certain book, is because of the similarities such as the constant 'blue imagery' that is used in the book. Oceans, water etc. Ties in with the song.

Anyway, I hope that wasn't too much of a boring read. xD This was just my interpretation of this lesser appreciated track.

Here's the book that triggered me to write the 'song meaning', it's online so give it a read, if you want. Smile

That's a really good interpretation! I personally don't think it HAS to be opium. But any drug makes a lot of sense, opium included.

Yeah it could be any drug, ofcourse! But, I was thinking opium/opiates because of the possible reference to quite a famous book by an opium addict. Razz

This is interesting... In a SOAD performance in 1997 at the Whisky A Go Go, when SOAD was performing, "blue" Serj said, "for those of you still in love, I give you Blue...". He makes it seem like its a love song.
I wonder if maybe he was referring to a non-literal type of love. Maybe like love as in an addiction for a drug?

Maybe he meant the drug as the one for whom he sings the love song to.

Well, right from the beginning, SOAD have never really revealed their song meanings. They've said it is what it means to you personally. So what Serj said at Whiskey A Go Go, could just be a red herring, and perhaps he said it to make people think. Razz
