System of a Down fans are very loyal. The first arrivals got in line nearly 6-7 hours before the concert even began. SOAD fans made fast friends with each other in line and smoked cigs together. I mostly stayed to myself and talked with my best friend for I am shy. The second the doors opened, everyone stood up and rushed in. The @ssholes took my camera away, even though I tried to hide it. I ran to the mosh pit as well as everyone else despite the workers yelling, 'DONT RUN!' There was only one spot left in the very front row of the mosh pit and I claimed it as my own and get this, it was IN FRONT OF DARON MALAKIAN!
The first act was Bad Acid Trip. And like the title says, it was sort of bad. They were too loud and all they did was scream. The lyrics were not decipherable at all. A lot of SOAD fans were yelling,'YOU SUCK' and I even screamed 'GO AWAY!' I'm sorry for those of you who liked that band, but it eventually gave me a migraine head ache! I wanted to blow my brains out. The members of the band were very animated though, they ran around the stage and did little kicks here and there. The singer played with a floppy dildo he said he found in Baltimore and place it on his head to be funny. Then he jumped off of the stage and put his arm around an expressionless security guard, and then went to the middle of the mosh pit and a lot of girls were reaching out to grab a piece of him. A little less than half an hour, this band finished and said 'ARE YOU READY FOR THE MARS VOLTA?'
The Mars Volta came out and they were much more tolerable than Bad Acid Trip. They got a lot more cheers and applauding. They were also more toned down but the problem was it sounded like one continuous song. No one could tell when one started and when another stopped. At first it was nice but after a while.. I wanted them to go away too. It consisted of 6 members and 3 of them had afros. After a while, I wanted them to go away too because they lasted over an HOUR and I just wanted to hear SOAD!
After they were done, I had almost forgotten why I came to the concert. I was so tired of standing already. After 10 minutes of waiting, we heard Daron warm up for BYOB. Then the lights turned out completely. Daron's shadow appeared on the curtain covering the stage and he started playing Soldier Side. The moment I heard his voice I started LAUGHING MY ASS OFF. I'm not sure if it's because his voice sounded like a little kids, just the first couple words he said anyways, or because of all the excitement[I love his voice though, sorta sounds like mine..]. Then the curtain dropped and, of course, like the other concerts, the crowd went wild because they played BYOB.
Whoever said Daron was not as animated as he used to be is WRONG. His side of the stage was THE place to be! He grabbed his ass a couple times and even his crotch. He danced all over the stage and made funny facial expressions. He pointed out to the crowd a couple times and spun around in circles so many times I don't know how he didn't collapse out of dizziness. In fact, I think he caught my eyes a LOT of times and smiled and opened his eyes wide when he saw me. It could be because I was holding up a skull that I wanted to give to him. I feel so happy because of that, I'm happy for the rest of my LIFE.
Anyways, Serj wasn't that animated. He just really stood there and sang. He moved around a little bit, but nothing compared to Daron and Shavo. In fact, I could barely hear Serj sing too, Daron was much louder. It could be because everyone was singing along though and blocking out Serj's voice. Shavo came to our side of the stage a couple times and the girls went wild. He would smile at our side and jump up on the sound box. He never caught my eyes though, but that's okay because Daron did and that's all I wanted out of life haha. John, as usual, just stayed behind his drumset and played his heart out.
Daron did the whole 'In America there are Red people and there are Blue people. Well I'm not Red, and I'm not Blue, but we can all combine and together, we can make Purple people!!!' Also, between some of the songs, he would go up to the microphone and say 'WHOO!' pause, 'WHOO!' pause, 'WHOO!' pause, 'WHOO!' pause, 'WHOO!' pause. It was funny : ) especially when the audience said 'WHOO!' back.
There were a lot of crowd surfers too-that HIT MY HEAD! They would get over the gate and then be sent back to the mosh pit by security.
During the cover song by Dire Straits called Sultans of Swing, Daron replaced the words 'we are the sultans, of swing...' with 'we are the system, of a down..' He also did this cool intro to Cigaro, it was basically a much slower version of the beginning lyrics.
Oh yes, Daron was wearing his Red jacket and after the first few songs he took it off and was wearing a shirt that showed his bare arms Really, the man didn't stop moving the entire concert, he was amazing.
The last song they played was, obviously, Sugar!!!! This is the only song Serj was actually jumping up and down to and very animated. The whole mosh pit was jumping up and down too.
After the concert ended, I asked security guards all over to give my letter and skull I made to give to Daron. All the guards refused to. I went outside to wait at their tour bus as well as 30 other fans. We waited for a very long time and still SOAD did not come out. My friend and I overheard this worker saying 'HA! All these fans think SOAD is coming out this way whereas they already came out another way!' Sure enough, we went to find them at another place and we saw the singer from the Mars Volta skateboarding! He had changed out of his clothes and now bare his tattoo filled arms. I asked him if he would please give Daron my letter and skull and he said 'sure no problem!' I was crying at this time and told him thank you so many times and how no one else would give it to Daron for me! Then I asked the Mars Volta singer for an autograph! He autographed the back of my ticket because I had nothing else. I felt really bad at this time for not caring about their performance. He's a really nice guy. I just wanted to see SOAD really badly, but now that I think of it, The Mars Volta was pretty good. The singer also said 'Daron is sleeping now though' and I said 'I DONT CARE!!! As long as he gets my letter I'm happy!' And then he offered to get Daron out of the bus for me! I STUPIDLY said no! It's probably the worst mistake of my life! But I didn't want to wake him up, you know? Then I left for 7-11, decided I still wanted to see Daron and walked back to find the Mars Volta guy. He had left. I asked some other fans where he went and they said they were all in the bus getting drunk. Sad. Oh well. As long as Daron reads my 20 page letter and likes the skull I made him hehe.
The next day I woke up so happy. The concert almost seemed like a dream. It will be in my heart forever. Four hot guys singing great, meaningful music, lights flashing on and off, mirrors.... yep, I'm happy. And let me just say that... SOAD is twice as good in concert than they are on CD. If someone isn't that big of a fan of SOAD, they should still go because they'll have a HELL of a good time. |

Yes the setlist was as usual! Exactly the same as they have on the systemofadown.com site for US tours. Plus, of course, the two cover songs My my, Hey Hey and Sultans of Swing. And thank you for the compliment!
And yes Aaron, I wish you could have been there too. |

i was at that show to it was great daron was flying around the stage on all the songs that he doesnt sing in parts of it and at one point shavo climbed a little off the stage onto a speaker and was perched up there for a song and then he went back and climbed on a speaker next to johns drum set and in the middle of that john hit him in the leg with a drum stick and during shavos rounds of the stage he went up and kicked serj in the back of the leg
the guys also started destroying some equipment at the end serj got a running start and closelined the mic stand and they were stomping on something
all the wooos daron was doing were funny and cool once the croud caught on and he was spining around while holding the mic stand at one point which was pretty cool and daron added the word baltimore to the prison song lyrics
as for bad acid trip and mars volta i showed up half way thru the BAT set and they were ok they screamed alot and you couldnt understand any lyrics but by the end i kinda started to like it alittle i think its some of the music where if your hearing it for the first time you wouldnt like it to much
and the mars volta were cool at first and they had a pretty good sound to them but the whole extended song set feeling got annoying they were go 10 minutes at a time with no lyrics and i was ready for them to leave by the time they finished the singer kept walkin to the side of the stage and takin sips out of his coffee cup and at first i thought he was dippin because of how much he was spitting but he did seem to have a nice voice from the parts he sang although i did like their drummer he seemed to be bangin away at the drums real good |

wow sounds like u had fun at the concert, and congrats on being able to give ur skull thing to daron ! I dont know if id have woken up serj if it was that way but who knows. Maybe if the mars volta guy tells him what happened, daron will reply to ur letter because he would feel ur sweet for not waking him up, who knows?! If u do get a reply, make sure to tell us, although im sure u will ! ur lucky i couldnt even get to where soad was with their bus cuz it was in this parking garage with lots of security, if that even was their bus im still not sure !
oh and yeah serj was a little animated for our concert, but not a lot. he danced around a little during this cocaine and something else i forget...and yeah daron was crazy on stage! during the solo on psycho he was just like on the ground and playing and then up and i cant explain it, but he just made guitar playing look so easy ! shavo kept going from side to side and like interacting with fans but i wouldnt say he was crazy. |

System of a Down is really loud on stage.
