Hi , I just arrived from Montreal's SOAD concerts but I'm warning you right now , my review will probably or it may already contains some mistakes cause I'm a french canadian. And english is my 2nd language...
anyway

First, at the Bell Center at 7:00 There was this band called Bad Acid Trip, and their name fit just right. They were not bad! but a little too hardcore and not enough melodic to what SOAD fans were expecting,... but I have to say the sound quality wasn't really good for their show and I sincerily think they had nothing to do with it; Arenas sounds like shit sometimes, u already know that.

Next, around 7:45, there was Mars Volta. Honestly, we didn't though they would come in Montreal, because Canada is a small population country and sometimes, maybe for some other reasons, Bands or tours don't come here. Espacially in Montreal! Anyway It was a great suprise. I Really liked it. Their show is like a never ending song just like their last album. I don't know a lot about them, but I though their music was trully fucked up but in a positive way! But again the sound quality wasn't really great , and they are like 7 or 8 musicians on stage for their show,so it has to sound well to be really good, and I think they should play in smaller places instead of arenas but it was a good show.

SOAD came around 9:30 and they started with Soldier-Side, I think they could not have found a better way to start their show. Then came almost all the same gig that they did in philly (no kidding)and I can't tell you in details what happened in which songs. I'm really sorry about that, I was caught almost all the time in the trash(or mosh pitt) but of course I saw the entire show. But i can't remember everything that happened, I don't know how people can remember almost everything from the concerts. Maybe they don't go in the mosh pitt Wink

Anyway, SOAD sounded great (don't know why their sound quality was better than the 2 other bands).

The band kept a connection with the crowd during all the concert but didn't speak to us in french Razz (So suprising). The crowd was responding and really expressive.
Half time of their gig, they played 2 new songs from the next albums and they were excellent. In my opinion, the second new songs is a little different than what we use to hear from them. It was a non-violent little groovy song but still filled with the SOAD oriental melodic sounds ( I hope I'm using the good words, it's a little hard for me). The only thing that some people didnt like is the way they left a the end. They threw up their picks and drummer sticks, really cool! but after they had left, the crowd screamed like hell for other songs and the arena's music radio started right after:just like if it was already planned that they wouldn't do a "rappel" (Maybe a "comeback" in english) Anyway, they never came back, but I understand that they do concerts everyday, and it must be exhausting sometime . They played long enough for me. I eared almost all the songs I wanted to ear except P.L.U.C.K which is my favorite. But even if i'm not a really HUGE fan of SOAD like some of you are, I definitly thinks this is the best band to see in concert right now

I'm sorry to post already a reply to my own topic but I felt like I have to rectify some things and I also couldn't sleep lol. What I meant by "rappel" is an encore, sorry about that and I don't know how the fuck I clicked on the Happy Face that appears beside the topic, but i did it. I'm really bad with computers, maybe i shouldn't have tried to make a review... but it's done

This was my first System concert, and I could say that this was not only the most intense, but also the most enjoyable concert I've ever been able to go to. I totally didn't know what to expect in the pit. By the way, the notes I'm going to write down about the sound quality is because the pit always seems to make the sound worse. You will also notice that I will comment very few words about System's performance because the moshing was so intense that you couldn't follow them.

My friend and I waited three hours before the gates opened, and I ended up second row. I was a little at the left of the pit and I realized I could have arrived 2 minutes before the doors opened and got the same place. Darn.

First off was Bad Acid Trip, at about 7:05. They really lived to their name and slogan, "Musical Rages of Psychopatic Fury" or something like that. Their actual music was blah, but head-nodding. Their style was death metal with a touch of progressive, because their time signatures were even odder than the Mars Volta, which I'll get to later on. The musicians seemed like they were glad to be playing in Montreal, and the Bass Player was awesome. The singer was a complete lunatic!! He went to hiding behind the guitar player to humping a doll to messing with a dildo. His voice sounded great though. The only thing I didn't like about them is that the Bass (or Bass Drum) sounded WAY too loud, to a point where your stomach would squeeze. I could barely hear the guitar and the singer because of the bass.

On to the Mars Volta. I usually LOVE bands with multiple members (Prog lover here, hehe) but this one left me with mixed reactions. I know their songs seemed to never end but if you are a prog fanatic you could see when they were jamming interludes between songs. The last song they played was great, sounded like an epic (this one lasted at least 15 minutes) it was filled with what sounded like their interpretation of Pink Floyd's unique Space Rock genre, then blasted into heavy music to end their set.

At this point, people started to squash themselves in order to get ready for System. Not that bad, it felt like getting stuck in a locker. We waited anxiously for System, and 30 minutes later they came on. The curtain was set and ready and you could see Daron walking to his spot. The lights go off and the crowd erupts. Then we see Daron's shadow while he plays Soldier Side. At this point I was completely getting squashed, to a point where I couldn't move at all.

Then comes BYOB and the curtain falls off, literally setting the crowd on fire. The pit goes crazy and never did I get squashed like that before. Not really enjoyable. When the thrash part came on I had to look out because there were MANY crowd surfers. I eventually lost my friend in sight from getting shoved around.

During Revenga I had to get out of the front rows because I almost couldn't breathe from being squashed. Then what do I know, I'm in the middle of a mosh pit! You may think I didn't like it, but I prefer getting shoved around while headbanging over standing there and getting squashed. The moshing was extremely intense and my 7" long hair was already wet from the action.

Then comes Know. I got to the side of the pit, only to realize there were no moshing whatsoever in there! Only people standing there and nodding. I took a break until Needles started, which was a great performance.

I'm gonna skip a few songs since it was the same thing over and over again, moshingmoshingmoshing.

Psycho was great and Daron did an extra 15 seconds of spinning around and tapping his notes at the end (I thought this guy couldn't tap?)

Chop Suey had a LOT of crowd surfers, and really intense moshing. Nothing else to comment though.

Daron played "My my, Hey hey" and everyone over 30 was singing it. I was the only one singing the lyrics to Kill Rock N Roll in my area of the pit. It was funny because no one was moshing at that point. I shouted the lyrics "Accidents happen" really loudly and Daron noticed me!

During Mr Jack they did their usual Sartarabad interpretation in the middle of the song, which resulted in lots of "wtf" and "boring" faces when I looked around. They also did the "FUCK U PIG" on the giant LED screen.

Cigaro had its funny acoustic intro which had lots of lighters open. I was at the right side of the pit at that point, which is funny because I went on both sides at least 4 times during the show.

TCMMFLIOTS came on and they played it perfectly. Moshing was really intense.

ATWA had everyone singing along and a bunch of open lighters in the seats.

Lost in Hollywood was a very-well-deserved break from all the moshing. I was so exhausted that I barely could sing the lyrics, or even put my lighter up in the air. I finally found my friend at the end of the song, who had his tshirt as wet as if he dove in a pool with it.

Question was alot better than I expected, I thought the Milan performance was horrible but that one rocked. Daron changed his White SG to the Red SG before that one.

War was awesome as usual with its interlude.

Toxicity had one of the most brutal mosh pits of the night.

During Science there was this old fart, complete with cowboy hat and tight pants, he was BODYSURFING. One of the funniest things to see last night.

At the slow thrash part of Suite-Pee Bad Acid Trip's guitarist came in and filled the death metal-ish vocals, which had an incredible response.

Instead of playing "Everything She Wants" before Sugar, Daron was playing to the crowd and Serj said that we were one of the loudest crowds on their tour so far.

After Sugar Daron was going crazy with his guitar, John threw 6 drumsticks into the crowd, Shavo wanted to break his bass but didn't and Serj just left. John whispered something to Daron's ears which seemed like a positive comment.

Notes:
- Shavo threw in a couple water bottles into the crowd at some point
- Serj brought his keyboard at the front of the stage when necessary (with the exception of Revenga) and when he was done he brought it back besides John's drumkit.
- The giant LED screen was only used 1/4 of the time.
- Shavo lit up either a cigarette or a joint during Question. He seemed like he was having a hard time lighting it Laughing
- They played a cover of Dire Straits' Sultans of Swing before Aerials, which was great.
- Serj sounded really weird from the pit. His voice sounded more girlish than usual.
- Between two songs Daron played a riff from Arto, it was somewhere near the end of the set.

Overall an incredible show and I can't wait to see them sometime next year. The mosh pits were extremely intense and exhausting.

Very well reviewed Gunner112k. It was my 2nd concert of Soad, the first one being their Toxicity tour in 2001 or 2002. This concert was twice as good as their first one!! We can see all the maturity they have gained since then! I was in the first row middle stage hanging on to the fence, and I was being so squashed it was incredible!! but hey, being first row at a crazy show like that is something everyone should try!! The sound of the show was better than on CD! Shavo looked completely stoned and even played one of the songs on his back on the ground. He kept moving around and climbing on to stuffs. Daron spinned around a few times and grabbed his crotch also. Serj was as usual, and looked like he was pretty happy when he told us that we were one of their loudest crowds on their 2005 tour and then we all bursted in shout and he smiled and lifted his hands in the air in appreciation.

I wonder if he says that to every other city too??

oh well, it was one hell of a show!

They played all their songs on the usual setlist + Sultans of swing while saying we are the system of a down instead of sultans of swing, a cool daron's voice robot interlude during one of their songs (forgot which one) and my my hey hey. It was cool that the guy from Bad acid trip came to sing along to one of their songs!!

overall, great show!! Can't wait for a 2006 Hypnotize Tour!!!

yeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhha! montreal was great..my first soad show but i deffinatley enjoyed it. i was rather dissapointed by Bad Acid Trip. i know its the style of the music but they were really obnoxious and loud. Mars Volta was a pleasant surprise and i enjoyed dancing to their third song...what ever the name of it was. they played the same version of WAR? as they did at the Glassgow SECC show in Scotland. except they replaced some of the guitar parts with piano whihc i was surprised to see Daron playin. over all they were just as beautiful on stage as i expected them to be! Shavop waved and pointed up to were i was standing once or twice so did Daron. they had a wonderful stage presance not only with the crowd but with each other..Daron and Serj embraced once or twice and John hugged Daron after Sugar. if you havent seen them yet try to..its most deffinatley worth it.

One thing I regretted that night is that I didn't buy any souvenir, like a tshirt that says "North American Tour 2005" or something like that. I saw tons of people at my school with these tshirts and it really pissed me off.

System of a Down is really loud on stage. There is no way that I can compete as an acoustic instrument, no matter what I'm using
