I thought it was an amazing book, the way he writes about religion increases my respect for it. And I'm into Slayer and Bill Hicks, lol. But I know what you mean, it's a lot of metaphors, sometimes you don't know what is what, it's all pretty confusing. But every time I read a Coelho book I concentrate a bit more than I usually would to let it all sink in and understand, and remember it all better. It's not for everyone, my mom had to put down The Pilgrimage after 70 pages or so because she couldn't concentrate lol.
