Most simply dismiss this as a 'B-Side album', but whether that's true or not, that takes nothing away from what an amazing album it is, and my personal fave of all System's albums.
Okay, here goes....
1: Chic N' Stu - An explosive start to the album, with the few moments of guitar at the beginning, only to be broken in by Serj screaming something almost indecipherable. The lyrics are simple, but get their message across.
2: Innervision - Brilliant opening to this song, and anyone would find it difficult not to sing along with Serj's vocals in this song. It's got a nice catchiness, and the space between chorus and verse is filled with some wicked guitar. A very nice contrast of melody, with Serj, and heavy guitar and drums.
3: Bubbles - Not a favorite of mine, but is still an enjoyable song, with some quick and choppy lyrics to sing along to, and nice happy bouncy guitars.
4: Boom! - Interesting opening speech, with the classic line of 'your neighbour, what a guy'. The chanting of Boom! certainly catches your attention, and although Serj is saying some very true and interesting things, those parts tend to drag a little.
5: Nuguns - One the top of the album, with an interesting start to the song, and some nice catchy lyrics, but there are two real stars in this song for me: John's drumming, and the awesome asian sounding guitaring in the middle of the song. Top notch.
6: A.D.D (American Dream Denial) - Nice opening, immediately catches your attention, which never flags. When the heavyness of the song kicks in, you are dragged into the song, and then given the pleasure of hearing some very nice drums. The lyrics are powerful, and for me hold an essence of truth, and although there isn't much screaming at all in this song, the words are still powerful and make you think.
7: Mr.Jack - Slow start to this classic System track, and very interesting, intruiging. The detail in this beginning part is what really catches your attention. When it begins to get more heavy, it's still slow heavy, sticking to the pattern set by the beginning. The sung lyrics are also slow, and seem to stick inside your head, allowing to know the lyrics and recognize this for the classic that it is. Some quite deep messages.
8: I-E-A-I-A-I-O - Starts off with tribal drumming, immediately grabbing your attention. And then come what seem like nonsense lyrics, but if you know that IEAIAIO are all the vowels from Idealization, then they are anything but nonsense. The chanted chorus is the most memorbale part, but the star of this is the Knight Rider solo.
9: 36 - Short, heavy, kinda screechy. Great though, despite how short it is. All the sounds contribute to this great random outburst.
10: Pictures - Nice guitars at the beginning of this song, and some very amusing lyrics here, with Serj's trademark changes into high pitch. Not to mention the amusing 'ba ba ba ba ba', this song has a nice chorus, with a nice place where it goes heavier, with nice screamy vocals backing Serj's melodising.
11: Highway Song - Flawless transfer from Pictures into this, almost fooling you into thinking it's the same song, until it cools right down, with some nice light guitars and drums, with Serj at his enchanting best.
12: Fuck The System - Some high pitched and screechy guitars provide an interesting start to this zany song. With Serj and his tongue rolling, high pitched best, and a great chorus anyone would love to sing along to. Great simple statement track.
13: Ego Brain - Beautiful start to this sing-a-long song, also transitioning nicely from the song before. Nice dreamy lyrics, song slowly with the calm guitar drums and bass. A meaningful chorus. A definate top song for the album.
14: Thetawaves - My person fave for the album, with a nice transition, and some nice head bopping guitars and drums. What gets me most abouy this song is how perfectly the lyrics speak to me, and how perfectly they seem to flow with the guitars etc. Nice changes from the slightly heavier verses to the more melodic choruses.
15: Roulette: I go on and off this song. I guess it's a mood thing. Sometimes it will seem like a simple but beautiful song, and any other times the repetitiveness of the lyrics and guitars etc just grate on me.
16: Streamline: A deep, bassy song, brimming with emotion, complimented by the heayness of drums and guitars. It slows down after the beginning, with Serj doing some beautiful harmonising, singing lyrics that speak to you. Then it kicks into the chorus, with both the harmony and lyrics carrying over. An excitable ending song, the opposite of the crazy upbeatness that started it.
My mark out of ten: 9/10 |

Excellent review. Echoes my sentiments almost exactly, with the exception that Bubbles is (IMO) better than Boom! and Highway Song is the best thing ever . Basically I, and you as far as I can tell, see STA! as an almost flawless album.
Wouldn't mind seeing some other reviews from you |
