After their Saturday Night Live swearing slip-up, members of System Of A Down may be seen as having loose lips. But when it comes to the second half of their Mezmerize/Hypnotize double-album concept, they aren't giving away any hints. SOAD drummer John Dolmayan says they want people to enjoy the just-released Mezmerize to the fullest and still have some anticipation left for when the Hypnotize half comes out
"No hints. I'm leaving it open, so you can have that mystery and hopefully it won't get leaked two weeks before the album comes out," Dolmayan says. "You'll be able to enjoy, like in the old days when you would wait until an album came out and then listen to it, as opposed to getting it three weeks in advance." Dolmayan says although Hypnotize is nearly finished, the band — also featuring Serj Tankian, bassist Shavo Odadjian and guitarist Daron Malakian — are protecting it from those who would love to post it all over the internet, instituting stern security measures to prevent leaks. He says that he doesn't have a problem with people downloading the songs if they can't afford the album, but he wants people to wait until they've actually released it. "What I'm against is people not having the patience to wait until an album is finished and truly finished, and a band has had its vision and met its vision and is ready to introduce that vision to the world. You wouldn't eat a cookie if it was half-baked, or maybe you would, I kind of like them like that. But you wouldn't eat a meatloaf if it was half-cooked, you wouldn't drink a wine if it was half-fermented. Why would you listen to music that isn't complete?" For now, the band are in LA preparing for their first big tour in three years. They will team up with Mars Volta to tour around Europe and will be back to play Canada sometime this summer. They would like to make up a recently cancelled show in Toronto, but with current scheduling they won't have time soon. As for the SNL slip that got SOAD some publicity right before this week's release of Mezmerize, Dolmayan says they haven't thought about it since and doesn't understand why the press ate it up. "It's ridiculous that people make a big deal out of it. Incredibly ridiculous that it's newsworthy. It's just a word. We didn't kill anybody. People should relax," Dolmayan says. "If you're old enough to be up at 11:30, I'm sure that you've heard that word before and it's not going to affect your delicate sensibilities if you hear it again. We act like these words are never spoken. The whole country tripped out because of Janet Jackson's breast. Who gives a fuck? How many times have you seen a breast before in your life? It doesn't offend me." By Stephanie Joudrey from chartattack.com
