SOADFans: Atlanta Concert Review (8/19) |

System and Atlanta were a great match this past friday night as we all witnessed the concert of the year and of my life!!!

So when we finally got there at like 15 mins before doors opened, me and my 4 VIP friends went to check out our suite. it was sweet, hehe. (i try). so then as B.A.T. were playing (they kicked ass) we all tried to get down to the floor and WHAT SHIT HAPPENED??? this old fucklady wouldn't let us down because VIP means you get a suite AND only A SUITE.
We were so pissed. i went to the radio station's stand and bitched at them until they gave me only 2 floor tickets so only me and one of my friends got down. the other three had to stay in the suite but at least they had fun and drinks and pizza and shit.
THE CONCERT:
The Mars Volta kicked ass. I started a "Fuck The System" chant and then the lights went down. my heart skipped two beats. daron's shadow came up through the "Mezmerize" painted cloth as he played and sang "Soldier Side".
I tried to sing along but i couldn't stop crying and sobbing. that all stopped when BYOB broke out and the cloth dropped.
Daron wore his new zappy red suit jacket. Serj wore his black pants and vertically striped shirt. Shavo wore all black with 3/4 pants and John was in a wife-beater.
after "BYOB" was "Revenga", then "Know" and "Suggestions". during "Suite Pee", at the bass-break before the bridge, Shavo held the frets "0 1 0, 5 4" as Daron plucked the low string, then they went into it.
Daron gave his "purple country" speech and his "superman" speech before "Kill Rock 'n' Roll" and played "My My, Hey Hey". during "Aerials", Shavo stood behind John smoking a blunt and then in the chorus he punched John's left china a couple of times.
At one point during the song he took a hit from his blunt and then offered John one as well. John laughed and shook his head. oh, god, wow, I can still recall vividly: the whole time, there was a mic stand and another little "techno box" thingy next to it that was RIGHT in between John's face and mine so he couldn't really see me, WHICH SUCKED because I value John before most members of my own family. He's like my second father. but later, Serj and Daron were getting a bit rowdy and knocked it over!! so i periodically pointed to John and myself and mouthed "I LOVE YOU" and he saw me and smiled and nodded!!!!!!!!!!!! he knew I was into him when I air-drummed to Toxicity accurately.
During every chorus, when he did his flams, I did it with him and he smiled. I cried. that was one emotional night.
They played pretty much what was on the other setlists from previous shows but i was really upset when they didn't play Spiders or X or Holy Mountain or even Radio/Video.
They did the cool mid-eastern intro and bridge to Mr. Jack. i danced. daron went all out on the Psycho solo, strait to Chop Suey! he also did the "My Cock" ballad before Cigaro and i was very impressed at how fast they played it. they ended with Sugar, no robo intro, though.
AFTER THE CONCERT:
I GOT JOHN'S STICK WHEN HE THREW IT INTO THE CROWD!!!!!!!! definitely a high point of the night.
I kept yelling out "i am god!". I went back to the suite to visit my other three companions and when I looked down into the arena I saw a bunch of people crowding around someone who looked just like Serj but had more hair and a big beard. it was Sevag!!!
I ran down the stairs with my friend from the pit but we were stopped by this security guard and said that these were the "meet and greet" recipiants and said that we needed a meet and greet sticker pass to come down. so i asked how to get one and then this guy who distributed them called to me and said "here i got one for you if you want!".
I desperately scrambled to the man and thanked him with my heart and soul.
I immediately went to Sevag and asked him "hey, are you Sevag Tankian?". very surprised that I knew who he was, he said yes and shook my hand. I told him that I read alot on the band and that serj mentions him in interviews and stuff and in the back inside cover of CD pamflets.
We got to talking and it ended up that i had to be 21 to go back cuz there must have been alchahol or some shit. Sevag appollogized to me cuz he really understood how much i love SOAD and turned around to take everyone back. I called for him and asked him to give John a piece of paper with my ideas of things to tell John in case i met him. I wrote it in 4th period that day at school. it said things like how John, drums, and SOAD in general helped me get through alot in middle school. i told him what songs were his best work in my opinion and when he had the best drum tones and that i promised him that one day i'll be the one up on that stage and he can watch ME. and pretty much anything else i could think of in 10 minutes. so i wrote my name and E mail adress on the paper, just in case, you know? so Sevag told me he would make sure to get it to John and we ended up having to leave. so we were all out front when we saw Sevag again with the guys who got to meet the band. i made sure with Sevag if he gave John the paper and he confirmed yes. and i got a picture with him which i'll post up later. that's about it.

nah, john just laughed it off. i think he's the only straight edge one in the band. hey, man, it's Shavo--of course it's pot! i forgot to mention... JOHN DID A SHORT SOLO AT THE VERY END OF THE NIGHT!!! John NEVER solos! can anyone else who went to their show tell me if John ended with a solo? cuz i think he did it just for me cuz he knew i was really into him. if that is so, i will go hang myself! hey, good review, mw314159! hope you dont mind if i use your setlist: SOLDIER SIDE BYOB REVENGA KNOW NEEDLES DEER DANCE SUGGESTIONS PSYCHO CHOP SUEY KILL ROCK N ROLL SAD STATUE VIOLENT PORN MR. I had forgotten about "all by itself". Haha. That was great last night. That isn't my set list, by the way. I just copied that off the official web site. I was a little high last night so I don't remember if they played every single song, but it looks about right.

for one, mars volta really sucked, it would have been better to have breaks between the songs than random noises, next, i never heard a fuck the system chant... so i dont know where your getting this stuff from :) also, your luck seems well, very un-real for lack of a better way to put it, winning vip tickets, starting a huge chant that i never heard (i was about 10 feet from the baricade down by the stage) and getting drum stick and a meet and greet pass etc...

hey man (stupidjew) i dont know if you will remember me but outside of the venue around 12 or so i was in the front and i shook your hand. i am the one with the blonde fro but anyways its a disipointment that the band didnt stick around to long and it was nice seeing such an enthusiast for music like i am just i am alot more quiet so i didnt say much to you. but rock on dude i look to be up on stage as well when im older. peace bro

wow your lucky.... I was there last night, and I had a fucking blast it was awesome!!! but I do think that the mars volta did a great performance........I wish I could have met them......or atleast been close to the stage.

Joel_Pilling: 1: The Mars Volta is an amazing array of origional sound. you cannot beat Latin-American-influenced Prog Rock. 2: i did start a chant. i never said it was big. i couldnt tell because i was in the middle and everyone around ME was doing it. i was second from the barrier. 3: you want to fuckin question my luck? i do well deserve this luck. i will post my picture with Sevag as soon as i bluetooth my pics from my phone to my comp. the guys at the radio station "99X" know me by name due to all the tickets i've won. i would not have met Sevag if i didnt get a backstage sticker. i DID get John's stick. i'm sure i let FordMoo see it. ask him. hey man, don't mess. Am3ricanIdiot. tell me what "X" sounds like and then listen to it. if they match up then i'll be a monkey's uncle, haha. sorry, as good of a song "X" is, they didn't play it. i've only heard it live once or twice.
