SOAD frontman Serj Tankian Explained His Band Has Been Behind this Cause for years. "The issue is denial. The issue is the first forgotten genocide of the 20th century, where one-and-a-half million Armenians perished. It's an issue that's not just political for us, but System Of A Down, being all of us of Armenian descent, it's personal, you know. Our family trees can't be completed. So it's something that we want to bring awareness to the situation and hopefully motivate Congressional legislation to do the right thing."
The band is directly challenging George W. Bush to fulfill a pledge he made during the 2000 presidential campaign to recognize the Armenian genocide. Since being appointed to office, the Bush Administration has reportedly opposed legislation to that effect, as did the Clinton Administration.
Serj Tankian believes that the U.S. government has been reluctant to acknowledge the genocide is due to geopolitical and financial interests in the Middle East.
More than one hundred organizations and a number of countries throughout Europe and Asia have acknowledged the killings, according to Tankian, who says he lost family members to the genocide.
