SOADFans: AUDIOSLAVE'S MORELLO SEES SYSTEM CARRYING RAGE TORCH
Posted by JP on Wednesday, September 07, 2005 - 11:12 PM
With System Of A Down making a huge statement with their first single off of their latest album Mesmerize, the band took on the politically charged subject of war. The band is not afraid to show their political side, and that's what Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello appreciates.

Morello was previously the guitarist for the seminal band Rage Against The Machine and he was asked if System is picking up the political torch that was left when his old band broke up.

"Yeah, I definitely agree that System Of A Down is carrying the banner of the overtly political rock, but it's not just that they're a political rock band. There are many political rock bands. They're a great band that has politics in it, and that's an important difference. Because the reason why bands, whether it's Rage [Against The Machine] or System, or the Clash or Public Enemy, why those bands get over, it's not because of the message exclusively, it's because message has such a powerful musical engine that it rides on. And that's when you really connect is the combination of culture and politics."

Audioslave is not a political band, but Morello is still very much a musical force politically. He does acoustic shows with under the moniker The Nightwatchman and he also has teamed with System Of A Down vocalist Serj Tankian for Axis Of Justice, an organization that helps youngsters find out more and get involved with various social and political organizations

i think RATM split in 2000... they've had an album full of cover songs, then Zack (vocals) left the band... anyways, Audioslave has the same producer as SOAD, alas Rick Rubin (he may have been the producer of RATM as well, i can't remember) - he was the guy who suggested Morello to ask Chris Cornell if he wanted to join, that's how Audioslave started. they've released their S/T debut in 2002.

I don't like too much Rick Rubin, he's the kind of producer who works for plastic-rock hits and he doesn't let the band play in the way they were ment to play. He like a genius of marketing music and he has the right formula to reach success.

I love how this write-up still says "please watch this pre-paid advertisement" in it.

I also like how apparently a reporter posed the specific question to Tom Morello "Are SOAD carrying the torch of RATM?" and Tom said "yeah" and so the reporter makes an article like "OMG TOM MORELLO SAID SOAD CARRIES THE TORCH"

I mean, Tom would kinda be made out to be a jerk if he said "Well, not quite..."

I chose to read this article based on what Tom has to say about the band. I heard somewhere before that he said when he first heard SOAD that he thought it was music for crazy people. But, since I did read it, and here goes my "mumbo-jumbo" (heh heh)... just like Tom says here, the torch isn't necessarily getting passed. They aren't picking up where Rage left off. Audioslave is picking up where Rage left off, simply because it has 3 remaining members, but Audioslave's content is much softer and deeper than Rage, IMO. I think the only way a torch gets passed is when we are teachers.
