SOADFans: Bassist Lensing New System Of A Down Video |

After directing four of his band's videos, including the recent "Question!," System Of A Down bassist Shavo Odadjian wanted little to do with the promotional clip for the title track from the group's upcoming album, "Hypnotize." The album is due Nov. 22 via American/Columbia.
"To tell you the truth, I really didn't want to direct this video," Odadjian tells Billboard.com. "I wanted some time off. We have a week and a half between tours and I really didn't want to do a video -- I just wanted to be in the video and let it happen. But after reading 15 treatments of garbage and me having a good idea -- if I don't tell my band my idea, it's an injustice to the band and myself -- I told them my idea. And everyone ripped up all of those treatments and said, 'You're doing the video.' So, that's why I'm here."
Currently finishing production for the video in Los Angeles, Odadjian won't go into detail regarding his visual interpretation of "Hypnotize," but does divulge the video epitomizes his vision of System Of A Down, which is that of an abstract painting. Known as an extremely creative and conceptual director, Odadjian has apparently caught the eye of Hollywood: he says he's entertaining an offer by Miramax Films to direct a major feature film.
"Film is really big to me," Odadjian says. "It goes deep into my heart. I love creating and I love people seeing my vision. So far everything I've done is pretty much taken in and accepted. I've never had any lessons or training. It's just I jumped into a pool of water without knowing how to swim and I paddled my way to the top."
As for System Of A Down, the band plans on touring its spring release "Mesmerize" and the upcoming "Hypnotize" globally through 2006. Now on the road with equally eclectic opener the Mars Volta, Odadjian says the band's 29-song, 110-minute set spans its entire catalog, including material from "Hypnotize."
"It's a pretty cool fucking bill," Odadjian says. "See the show and see what happens."
