Ozzfest Scranton, PA - July 26, 2006 Review |

I can't believe I actually got to see System of a Down live. I had lawn
tickets, but my friend and I managed to get right up front against the fence
across from the center of the stage. We got there pretty early, so we got to see
some other bands perform. I really liked Disturbed, they were great live and
their performance convinced me to buy one of their CDs. The lead singer really
has a lot of presence onstage. Anyway, after they finished there was a set
change and System came on!
It started off with Daron playing the intro to 'Soldier Side', but his vocals
seemed pretty off tonight. Then they launched into 'Attack' and the crowd went
crazy, and I couldn't stop jumping around. I haven't listened to the new album
too much so I didn't know the words. But I was singing along to every other
song.
Here's the playlist -- it's not in order: Attack, BYOB, Needles, Deer Dance,
Toxicity, Aerials, Chop Suey, Psycho, Revenga, Cigaro, Violent Pornography,
Question!, Old School Hollywood, Radio/Video, Lost in Hollywood, Kill Rock 'n
Roll, Hypnotize, War?, and Sugar.
I was surprised by the variety that they played, especially since it was
Ozzfest. 'Old School Hollywood' and 'Lost in Hollywood' seemed really out of
place. 'Hypnotize' was really good: the vocals were perfect and the crowd was
singing along. 'Aerials' was also amazing; Serj had such presence and had the
crowd going, "Ahh ah ahh" along with him. At the beginning of 'Violent
Pornography' Daron did a weird speech. He wasn't making much sense. 'Chop Suey' was
really good and Serj told us all to clap. The slow intro to 'Cigaro' was hilarious
with Daron singing "My cock..." It had me cracking up. 'Question' sounded nice
with Serj on acoustic guitar, probably one of the better vocal performances.
'Radio/Video' seemed like a weird choice. At the point in the song where they sing
softly "Hey man look at me rockin' out, I'm on the..." the lights dimmed down
and it got quiet, and then where he screams "Video!" they all turned on again.
Daron sounded a little better for 'Lost in Hollywood' but his vocals weren't the
best. Before 'Kill Rock 'n Roll' Daron said, "This next song is dedicated to all
the bands on the second stage" which was funny but kind of mean.
Before
'War?'
Serj spoke to crowd about how it's the people who make important decisions not
the government. And he pointed at people in the crowd and said "You know the
truth!" and at one point it looked like he was facing me. Haha.
'Sugar' was a
great end to the night, everyone went totally crazy. Serj kneeled down on the
stage at the part where he sings, "I sit in my desolate room, no lights, no
music" and then "Just icecream!" That was funny.
So, onto the band members. Daron was spinning around in circles and headbanging
while he played, and Serj pretty much stayed in one spot and did the whole hand
in the air thing while he sang. But during a couple songs he danced around and
acted really goofy. I found myself watching Shavo a lot though. He was all over
the stage, even up by John's drumset, and bobbing his head to the music and
seemed to be having a good time. Serj's vocals were good but sounded a little
scratchy, but that might have been the sound system. Daron's voice is really bad
live, it's high-pitched and squeaky. He sounded good playing a song that came
before Aerials, the one that ends with "We are the system of a down." The music
sounded good though, it wasn't too loud.
I was just a little disappointed that they didn't interact with the crowd more
though. But I guess they had to cram in all those songs into their set. Daron
talked to the crowd the most, and Serj said "How are you guys tonight" during
BYOB, but that was pretty much it. I actually thought Disturbed had a better
live show, the crowd just got into it more. Still, I enjoyed System's
performance and singing along to all my favorite songs.
Two great concerts in one night. It was definitely something I'll remember.

Yes sounds like they're sticking to the same set for almost all of the Ozzfest....but either way, I could watch them do it over and over, its a little different every night...as I found out seeing them 3 nights in a row! I wish Serj would have done more talking at the ones I went to, but LOL I was just excited to SEE HIM right in front of me! Awesome that you got to the front RestlessWhisper7!

Hey, cool review, full of life. Wow! Really good, I am all excited about their show in Raleigh. And yeah, that's the Dire Straits' "Sultans of Swing", which in my opinion has one of the best guitar solos ever. About Daron's voice: Well, last year, when I saw them in Austria, Daron did not really sing his parts alone but was always supported by Serj, I don't know why. I will see what he's like in Raleigh and then I'll tell you more. I am really happy for you that you had fun.
