We get there a little late and miss Between the Buried and Me, and Walls of
Jericho, and I was interested in both of them, but oh well, of course I was
mostly there for SOAD.
I was RIGHT up to the fence for Bad Acid Trip, they were so fun live! I got some
sweet pictures, and my girlfriend and I got our shoes signed by them! They were
amazing.
A few other bands entertained me as well, but most of them were, same breakdown
and saying 'MAKE SOME FUCKING NOISE!' go to Ozzfest and you'll hear that 100000
times in one day.
Then to the headlining show, if any of you know the tweeter center, it has a
pavilion, with seats, then seats not under the pavilion, and then the lawn. We
had seats under the pavilion, very close, too!
It was hell waiting for SOAD to show up, watching all of those more lame
bands... I was interested in Dragonforce but...the crowd was not excited for
them and took away from it a little. Waited and waited, then disturbed came on,
and really rocked the place out- SOAD could not be beaten though.
They start to set the stage for System of a Down- And it seems like the longest
stage setting yet. Bringing out all kinds of new lights, and watching them put
up all the equipment, it just became more and more exciting.
It wasn't dark enough to make Daron totally invisible, but still dark. .. Then
'Soldier Side' came.
Heard it on the Mezmerize tour, too, and it never failed to give chills down my
back and a smile on my face. Daron's voice only grew louder and more powerful,
and more exciting.
Then 'Attack'- A little bit slower than usual, and un motivated, but system
always is with the first song, so I was not discouraged at all. And then Serj
got to screaming 'attack' more loudly, and it was fine.
Then 'BYOB'- And to all the bastards who say Daron is losing his edge, need to
see him now. It was MUCH crazier than the Mezmerize tour. Daron completely
stopped playing his guitar and grabbed the microphone stand while screaming 'why
do they always send the poor?!' Letting the microphone stand almost fall, and
causing one of the roadies to come out and fix it...and he did that about twice.
It rocked.
Then 'Revenga'- I had also seen this previously, just awesome as always, and I
love how Serj has incorporated that scream during Daron's solo, always awesome.
Oh! and watching the recording- Someone through a giant beach ball on stage, and
Daron had said- "I saw her laugh, then she said-" Then he went and kicked it off
and ran back and continued singing. Then the beach ball returned, and one of the
roadies picked it up, but that was entertaining. Daron seems to get stuff thrown
at him on important parts. But he's always fun.
Then 'Needles'- What is there to say about needles in particular? The
bridge was really nicely done, I love that part.
Then 'Deer Dance'- Amazing, really really really good energy from the band and
the crowd, the solo was extremely awesome as well. No stage dive from Daron
though Sad But I can obviously see why, tweeter center is all seats Evil or Very
Mad pshaw.
'Suggestions' - I don't remember this one as well either, I had to some moving
around, but when I started paying attention, they were doing the bridge, which
is the part right before 'the ships are multiplying day after day sir, etc' And
that was all really great, Serj's extra techno-ish add-ins were really awesome.
Then it went into...
'Psycho'- I love that transition from suggestions to psycho. And of course,
Daron told us to clap our hands. And of course, no one refused. Well, maybe some
people did, but they had beer in their hands. psycho was SO awesome! I recorded
the solo. And Serj said "you really don't have to be a fucking hoe." I don't
know why it entertained me so much...just fun to hear flourishes like that. The
solo was extremely awesome, and then Daron commenced the guitar sex, on his
knees, and made weird noises with his guitar, as did Serj with his piano, then
it got quiet. And I knew what was coming next, because they always put these 2
songs after each other.
'Chop Suey'- Chop Suey! everyone knows it, and everyone loves it. Not really
much to say about chop suey, either. You all know it, haha.
Live though? Completely wonderful, nothing standing out in particular about it
though, just good ol chop suayyyyyyy. Yep!
'Lonely Day'- It being Boston and all...and since people know Daron is into
sports, a crowd of people (probably drunk) begin to chant "red sox, red sox, red
sox!" And Daron was away getting some of his red gatorade- but then he came back
and said "Right now I'm watching the dodgers, I don't give a fuck about the
american league". And a lot of people cheered. then once that was done he said
"But if it means anything, if I had to choose, I'd pick red sox over the yankees."
Causing...much more cheering.
Then he changed the lyrics, which was really awesome- "Such a lonely day, and
it's mine, the most loneliest day of my life. Such a lonely day, if you're a
yankee's fan- It's a day that I can't stand."
That caused much laughter and chortling.
But then I started getting light headed, which was why I couldn't' remember a
lot of stuff... Probably from all the herbs everywhere, 10 people were lit up
around me. I was inhaling 60% pot. mmm!
And my girlfriend was about to pass out from dehydration, so me...being the most
alive one, went and got some bottled water, because that's what we are the
generation of, and I missed-
'Kill Rock N' Roll'- But it's okay, I had already seen it live before, and of
course I could still hear it, and it still sounded awesome. Then when I
returned-
'Old School Hollywood'- That is such a fun song to hear live! I'm glad they did
it. Daron's techo-voice-thing was really awesome to hear again, too. It was
really cool, definitely not my favorite song, but I was very appreciative and
entertained to hear it live.
Now the order is just screwed, I really can't remember it that well... I'm going
to guess 'Cigaro' was next.
'Cigaro'- With Daron's little intro. It was really fun to sing along to, haha, I
felt proud, even though I'm sure anyone with a computer knows how it goes
anyway. and it ends with "And I love you." But he carried out the "love" for a
really long time, and got everyone else holding the note too. Then skipped the
'you' and just straight into the song. It was so awesome, and it was
entertaining to watch the people around me who hadn't heard it before, because
they were all drunk and like- "ha! he said cock!" really great.
'Violent Pornography' - Daron didn't talk much about the...intro I've been
hearing about. He said we buy what we sell and sell what we buy, and how we're
all addicted the television. And we do what daddy tell us to do... And that
Jesus will come and be crucified and we will watch. And other stuff I don't
really remember. Not as fun as some of his past violent-pornography intros- But
still fun<3 The song itself was fun like always, a little faster than usual, and
Daron doing random motions explaining how one chokes on a cock and gets
sodomized. Thanks Daron!
(sometime during the concert) Shavo lit up.
Next I'm going to guess 'Radio-Video'- YESSSSS! RADIO-VIDEOOO!! I heard it live!
wow. I was waiting since Mezmerize tour, only to not hear it. and they did it!
that was so exciting. Probably the best preformed song done there. It was really
just... like a drug. At that part where it's really quiet as Serj says "hey man,
look me at rocking out I'm on the..." *loudness* The pace slowed down A LOT, and
they got really quiet, like, extremely quiet. At first I thought it was a
technical error. Then of course, the loudness boomed in, then they did it again,
that was so exciting, and I got it recorded<3 Then right before the solo- Daron
said, "Everybody dance with us right now!" Then during the solo they...all
danced! And it's so fun to look back on, hahaha, Serj's dance is lovely.
'Hypnotize'- I had never heard it live before. Or not...in person anyway, and I
was really impressed! Serj's voice wasn't as...flat as it sounded on the live
recordings. And Daron's new solo was very fun, and Shavo and Harry Perry
interacted a lot, it was pretty fun. I got to meet Harry Perry, too. Well not
really meet him, because I didn't know it was him at the time, haha. But he was
walking around playing his guitar during the day at Ozzfest with people all
around him. I just made fun of him like- "Who's that old indian dude playing
guitar?" Yeahhhh. That was a laugh. But Shavo and Harry were constantly dancing
and bouncing around together, Harry would mimic Shavo sometimes.
Let's say 'Aerials' came after, so... Aerials- Harry and Shavo went on top of an
amp, like Shavo usually does. And they just chilled out and danced together, and
were being fun. Aerials is always really great live. The breakdown is awesome
and a fun thing to headbang to. Then at the end Daron asked us to all sing
along, and a lot of people did.
'Lost In Hollywood' - Calm, Quiet, Lighters everywhere, amazing. Nothing in
particular happened to write about. It was lost in hollywood, and always good.
'Question!' - It left me with no questions, but with one statement- Fucking
Awesome. it reminded me of the KROQ almost acoustic christmas, because Shavo and
Daron hung out together, doing things in sync with each other. And Shavo kept
grabbing Daron's had and telling him something. I'm not sure what, obviously.
But it was cool to see, a reassurance that the band obviously doesn't hate each
other. And that their hiatus isn't due to hating each other. Serj messed up a
bit on his guitar, but Daron was flawless. Hitting those notes like they were
nothing, even on the extremely fast part, of course he didn't mess up. It was
awesome. Then at the end where it gets quiet, all of the n00bs started cheering.
Only to have Serj scream again. Pshaw n00bs.
'Toxicity'- Awww, it was a bit sad because, it means SOAD were on their way back
to the tour bus. Oh well, let's rock. Much air-guitaring and head banging by me.
It definitely was a rush. Daron's flourishes were spectacular, and the guitar
setting he uses is much better than the one on the album, I believe. Serj did
really well too, sometimes I think toxicity sounds weird live, nowadays, but
they all did wonderful.
'Sugar'- Sugar, it's so weird, isn't it? if anyone agrees. You hear it, and
you're so excited. Thinking 'FUCK YES! SUGAR!' but part of you says, "Fuck!
they're leaving!" Ahhhhh. Anyway! extremely great energy. Seeing them like that
made me very excited. It was just amazing. They were all moving around a lot,
especially Serj, like always. His feet skipping and hair bouncing. And changing
up the lyrics.
"People are always chasing my down, pushing my face to the ground" Then
something unintelligible because he's going so fast, then he says, "What the
fuck am I saying?" in his normal voice. haha that was great.
Then he did the "I shit, you not, no lights, no music, Just Ice-cream! I licked
everyone!" I personally liked the Mezmerize tour one more. "I sit, in my
desolate room, no lights, no music, just angry, I've fucked everyone, I didn't
wear a rubber, and it was with your mother!"
haha oh well, back to Ozzfest!
SUGAR ROCKED. Always, they were all so wonderful, and energetic. Every crazy
note echoed through and impacted everyone.
And that's it. And to wrap it up-
Anyone who is worried about System of a Down going on hiatus for too long, or
breaking up. Don't be.
This concert showed me that System of a Down will rock forever, and will never
stop. For now, they went out with a bang. But they will come back, with more
than a bang.
Long Live System of a Down.
