Just then the fast-climazing into to 'Chop Suey!' triggers an arm-breaking mosh in the pit that suggests the crowd shares his sentiments. But its when Tankian straps on a guitar and carries the band into a soaring, psychedelic lead in to 'Mr.Jack' that the band's arresting musical prowess shines through.
It's because system of a down never take the obvious musical route and have the ability to make every note and beat sound interesting and unpredictable.

Tankian's eccentric vocals are just another instrument- the other members as much the center of attention as he is, it's electrifying stuff- even when Daron attempts a bizarre cover of Wham!'s 'Everything She wants' "Oh, are we boring you?" asks Malakain, eliciting a bellowing response in the negative and spraying the space with the first, frenetic notes of a set-closing 'Suite Pee/Suagr' double-header.

That the crowd shouts along to lyrics like 'the Kombucha mushroom people/sitting around all day' with total conviction- like anyone knows what the fuck system are on about -is a credit to the band's pied-popper allure .

Kerrang Magazine Secret London concert review!
Posted by soady on Thursday, April 14, 2005 - 01:36 AM

Kerrang rated ASTORIA Concert as kkk (great) and wrote this good review titled :

EVE OF DESTRUCTION - System of a down Up for "Mesmerize" With explosive London show !

MOST NIGHTS, if System of a Down were any tighter as a unit they'd collapse into a quantum singularity- just not this night.
They're missing cues, stumbling over choruses, and at times fucking about as if a mate's parents are away for the weekend and they just turned up to play an impromptu house party.

Only this 'secret' gig has sold out the Astoria without any advertising, it should be noted.
And judging by 2,000 bobbing heads- including that of body-guarded NIN front man "Trent Reznor" in the venue's upper VIP area - no- one's complaining about the lack of precision.

The convulsive rhythms and socially conscious lyrics of 'B.Y.O.B', off their upcoming Mesmerize album, have just reverberated across the space like a thunderclap, and the whole of the Astoria's lower deck is in motion.

Singer Serj Tankian's ever playful, mentally unhinged vocals dance around guitar-jester Daron Malakain's six stringed looniness.
Bassist Shavo Odadijan digs into his Thunderbird, carving huge sloppy grooves across drummer John Dolmanyan's rock-solid rhythms.
Combined, it's an exhilarating display of existential angst and a singular musical vision shared by four troubadours who just don't give a fuck about genre.

Tonight they've left their followers spellbound by their fanciful charms !
