Ozzfest headliner System of a Down delivers a frenetic send-off
Ozzy Osbourne was absent from the last stop on this year's Ozzfest, but he wasn't really missed -- not by the 20,000 people who filled Sound Advice Amphitheatre on Sunday and not by the 17 metal bands that entertained them for half a day. At its usual tour finale in western Palm Beach County, Ozzfest got along nicely without its namesake atop the bill.
Osbourne, 57, scaled way back on personal appearances on the tour's 11th go-round, betting that his festival could thrive on brand name and reputation. It will be tempting for heavy metal's antic father figure to view the turnout as proof that he can spend his summers at home, and it's not clear when or if he will return to South Florida.
But a provisional goodbye is definitely in order for the band that took his spot.
"Tonight will be the last show we play for a long time together," Daron Malakian, guitarist and singer for System of a Down, told the capacity crowd during Sunday's last performance. "We'll be back. We just don't know when."
That announcement came well into a set of almost anguished intensity by one of the arena circuit's oddest combos: four Armenian-Americans who came together 11 years ago in Los Angeles to make socially conscious metal, inspired in part by the Armenian genocide of 1915-1917 -- the defining horror of their ancestry.
If System of a Down is going on an indefinite break, the band leaves at the peak of its powers. The band played its whiplashing songs with stop-start precision, while Malakian and lead vocalist Serj Tankian sang with operatic and sometimes comical fury. This was a frenetic send-off and, at the same time, a reflective run through material released between 1998 and 2005. |

Even before entering the gates of Nissan Pavilion, it felt as if I was in a different world. Just by standing in line (that took 20 minutes to get through) there was clothing to fascinate the eyes and hair that screamed, “ROCK ON!” There were even body piercings where the “sun don’t [normally] shine.” There were no metal detectors and rarely a bag check so I was able to sneak in a small video camera. What I COULD NOT sneak in, however, was an Armenian flag I made out of poster board and a stick from outside as the flagpole. On the back of the flag I wrote “JUMP DARON.” I wanted him to see I care about the genocide and admire his heritage, and I wanted him to crowd surf (the jump part). The guards told me there would be too much smoke and that my flag would catch on fire. I watched as he roughly stuck it in the trash can. There went my dedication to SOAD! What a heartless jerk. Anywho… |

After seeing System for the first time at Ozzfest in Buffalo, NY, my
boyfriend and I knew we had to see them again before their hiatus. We drove all
the way to Virginia Beach to catch another show, and it was definitely well
worth the 24 hour drive and $400.00 in gas to get there and back. The Buffalo
show was awesome, and I really didn't think it could be topped, but boy, was I
wrong! The Virginia Beach concert completely blew me away.
It was an extremely hot day. We got to the amphitheater around 2:00pm, in time
to see Atreyu and Black Label Society. They both did great. Zakk Wylde from BLS
is an amazing guitarist. After them, it was time to grab some cold beer and head
over to the main stage Very Happy |

We lived in a student residence with complete strangers, had 20 hours of bus
travels, slept 12 hours in the 4 days spent there and it was all out of our poor
teenage pockets. Best money ever spent.
I won't lie, when we arrived at Parc Jean Drapeau I was miserable. Rain was
pounding, we hadn't even had tickets yet and we had gone 30 consecutive hours
without sleep. Yet soon enough, tickets were purchased from the box office and
the sun was shining. After lining up for two hours and hearing a Bad Acid Trip
soundtest in the distance, people flocked into a park drenched by a previous
shower.
We camped out briefly on the hill at the back of the park to get an aerial view
of everything. The amount of people was unreal. Then as I was eating my hotdog
géant, it started pouring again. In mere minutes I was drenched and cold, I
could barely see the stage. So my friend and I trecked through the mud to the
outskirts of the pit where we thought it would be warmer and chances of survival
would be greater. We ended up spending the entire show at the railing left of
the sound/equipment area about 40 yards from the stage, it was a near perfect
view. |
