Guitar World Interview with Daron Malakian: "A Scar Is Born"

"Knowing that he [Serj] wasn’t going to be singing these songs, it kind of put me in a direction that’s more suited to my voice, my mood and my character as a singer." ... "I would expect another Scars album before another System album."
- Daron MalakianKicking back at the Steakhouse Studio in North Hollywood,
California, Daron Malakian bobs his Los Angeles Dodgers-capped head while
“Funny” tumbles out of the control room speakers. A deliciously hooky pop song
with a minor-key melody worthy of the Kinks or the Zombies, “Funny” is one of
the tracks featured on the forthcoming self-titled debut from Scars on Broadway,
Malakian’s new band with fellow System of a Down-er John Dolmayan. “I think my
Sixties influence is bleeding through on this record,” Malakian says.

Scars On Broadway Live from Coachella Review

Adjusting
my favorite brown hat as I clenched the railing only ten feet from the stage I
felt the tension set in my mind. “They better be good”, “They have to be good”,
“What am I going to do if they aren’t good?” My mind was in a fog of confusion.
I didn’t know what to think about my current situation, after Serj’s show
stopping performance the night before I was hyped to see what Scars On
Broadway had to offer. I didn’t watch or listen to any of the Whiskey show
recordings because I wanted to experience all their songs live, for the first
time.

Scars on Broadway: Keeping product under wraps

Last
week I had the chance to talk with System of a Down's Daron Malakian and
John Dolmayan about their new project, "Scars on Broadway," which is playing
at Coachella this weekend.

I wrote a piece that ran in today's paper, but here are some tidbits that didn't
make the story:

First off, I just want to say how cool these guys were and that they are really
dedicated to Scars on Broadway.

The band actually did a surprise show at the Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood on
April 11 and Malakian was stunned by the reaction of the fans.

Scars on Broadway album release on July?

"Come eat some chemicals with me," screamed Daron Malakian, the
creative mastermind behind System of a Down, and now, Scars on Broadway. That's
an invitation that 90 percent of the packed crowd in Hollywood's famous
Whisky-a-go-go was gladly ready to take him up on. However, it was merely the
refrain from one of Scar's amazing new tracks and not a
come-with-me-backstage-and-get-fucked-up proclamation.
This delightful little chorus came halfway through Scars' phenomenal debut
show at The Whisky on Friday night.
The club could not have been more crowded, with bodies packed to the walls.

Rolling Stone's SCARS preview

With
System of a Down on hiatus, guitarist Daron Malakian took the opportunity
to explore more song-based work, writing most of the album on keyboard. That
said, several tracks have an intense metal-prog feel, which SOAD fans will find
familiar.
"I wouldn't say it's where we left off with System," Malakian says of the
Scars project, which he produced himself (with early input from Rick Rubin) —
and also includes SOAD drummer John Dolmayan. "I have been trying to go
to another place with it — without completely losing who I am."

Serj Tankian Sings of Hope and Utter Despair

The former lead singer of System of a Down shares his feelings of hope, inspiration and utter dejection about our current state of affairs. When
Serj Tankian takes on political and social issues on his new solo album,
Elect the Dead, he doesn't mince words. In the most political song on the
album, "The Unthinking Majority," he writes about a hypocritical warmongering
government running a society controlled by antidepressants (in 2006, over 227
million antidepressant prescriptions were dispensed in the United States.):

Shavo Odadjian: You Always Have To Top Yourself

There’s
been plenty of talk about whether or not System Of A Down is on a
permanent hiatus, but bassist Shavo Odadjian made it quite clear in a
recent interview with Ultimate-Guitar that he doesn’t intend on ever tossing his
platinum-selling group to the wayside. The time off has been all about exploring
new creative outlets, and since the break was announced, Odadjian could easily
be described as the most prolific member.

It’s true that Odadjian has been recording an album with his hip-hop project
Achozen, but it’s his work away from the traditional band format that should
likely draw the most attention. His grandest endeavor has been launching UrSession.com, a new website that was created in response to the rapidly dying
major label system. The site gives musicians the opportunity to essentially
audition for a record contract via uploaded videos or audio. And who exactly is
the judge of all the video submissions? We are.

RZA and Shavo Explain Collabo Album

While
fans and Wu-Tang Clan enthusiasts continue to lay down opinions on the group's
latest project 8 Diagrams, the Wu's founder, the Rza, is moving on to new
projects.

His latest project is a group called Achozen, consisting of himself and System
Of A Down bassist Shavo Odadjian. The two musicians have been working on
the genre blending project since 2005, and now, it's finally nearing completion.

While Shavo calls the project simply "music" not putting it into any musical
genre categories, RZA told us while in L.A. last week to expect something "very
spiritual."

Scars On Broadway: In The Studio

SOAD side project trades metal for melodic rock.
John Dolmayan thought he'd
have a few relaxing years when System Of A Down went on hiatus in 2006. It
didn't work out that way: He appeared on bandmate Serj Tankian's solo debut, and
now he's behind the drums again in sessions for Scars on Broadway, his new band
with SOAD singer-guitarist Daron Malakian. Surrounded by flickering candles at
Sunset Sound in Hollywood, Dolmayan is pounding a forceful, brooding beat that's
heavy on the cymbals. Watching nearby, Malakian calls it "the Dolmayan shuffle."

20 QUESTIONS WITH SERJ TANKIAN!! Iann Robinson Interviewing Serj Tankian

Rarely if ever do I drop the term “artist” about anybody in modern music. The music world for the most part is a decadent decaying whorehouse that needs to be burned to the ground a rebuilt. That being said Serj Tankian is a true artist. Not only am I a huge fan of his music but Serj is an inspirational person to know and a great example of what can be done to change the world. Serj just released his solo album “Elect The Dead” and he took time out of his busy schedule to talk to Our Worlds At War.

Theatre Of Pain

With
its drab architecture and dim exterior lighting, Steakhouse Studio sits in the
center of a nondescript North Hollywood street surrounded by seedy restaurants
and grim houses. In stark contrast to the soulless Valley sprawl around it,
though, tonight the studio’s control room pulsates with kinetic hard rock
blasting out of the speakers and bouncing off the walls, volcanic guitars and
brontosaurus drums perfectly transitioning from fevered verses into fiendishly
catchy choruses.
These are the unfinished songs that may or may not form the heart of the debut
album from Scars On Broadway, the collaborative effort of guitarist-frontman
Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan, both best known for their work in
System Of A Down. At first, Malakian was hesitant to unveil a handful of
in-progress tracks that lack bass and keyboards, but as he now lounges on a
leather couch while enjoying the occasional bong hit, he’s clearly pleased by
Revolver’s ecstatic reaction.

Outside The System: 2007

England seemed nice this time of year; the festival was going to start later
this evening, and I can already smell the testosterone of the moshpit. I was
visiting a friend, as she and I were outside sitting at tables lined up under a
pavilion. The buffet they had for the festival was plenty; there were more
people than I ever expected.

My friend had mentioned to me how she had seen System Of A Down just a few days
ago. Of course my gratuitous response was because I was more than happy she had
gone. It had been almost one year since I’ve seen any band perform. I wish I

Interview with Antonio Pontarelli

Once
you hear modern rock artist Antonio Pontarelli, you will never forget the sound
of this passionate electric violinist. He puts a spin on everything he plays to
make it his own creating a signature trademark.

Antonio picked up a violin at the age of three and started winning competitions
by age seven. His parents shortly discovered that their child was gifted in
music and it wasn't long before he was playing on national television. His
electrifying performance and arrangement of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" won
NBC's ITV's "America 's Most Talented Kids" in Nov.2004. In February
2005, he delivered the performance of the season in their "Tournament of
Champions" episode when he ignited the audience with his very first note. Later
that year he had the honor of being the "Young Artist Awards" winner for
"Outstanding Young Rock Musician." The awards are helmed as the Oscars for
talented young people in film, television and music.

After his successful collaboration with Serj Tankian's 'Elect The Dead'.
In addition with sharing the stage with Serj, SOADFans were curious to Ask
Antonio some questions about what he did, what he dose and what he's gonna do in
the future...

Daron Malakian Lost in Hollywood

In the mid-1980s, Daron Malakian was a shy youngster living in an
apartment near the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Vine Street, and
his parents spent much of their time trying to shield his eyes from the seedy
parade of Hollywood's sidewalks.

"From the playground of my school," Malakian recalled, "we would see prostitutes
and transvestites, guys holding hands, the homeless people, all these things my
parents really didn't want me to see."

That playground was at the Rose and Alex Philibos Armenian School, the same
campus where two other future members of the metal band System of a Down went to
class. There, all of the boys were immersed in the traditions of their shared
Armenian heritage, but when they rode their bikes home they passed through that
chaotic asphalt theater of Hollywood. "It was only as I got older that I
realized that not everybody grows up like that," Malakian said.
